This is lesson 3 of 5 in the unit "Explaining the World". Lesson Title: Brainstorming Topics for Explanations Lesson Description: Students will engage in brainstorming sessions to generate ideas for their own explanation writing. They will learn how to choose topics that are interesting and suitable for explanation writing, focusing on clarity and relevance.

Brainstorming Explanation Topics

Overview

This 30-minute lesson is Lesson 3 of 5 in the unit "Explaining the World". It engages third class students (8-9 years old) in lively brainstorming activities to generate and select interesting, clear, and relevant topics for their own explanation writing. Students will develop skills in identifying suitable topics that lend themselves well to explanation texts, an essential competency under the Irish Primary Language Curriculum (2015) for English. The focus on clarity and relevance aligns with strands from the English Language Curriculum, particularly Oral Language (Strand Unit: Talking and Listening) and Writing (Strand Unit: Composition).

    • Strand Unit: Writing – Composition
      • Planning writing by generating ideas and deciding on topics
      • Writing for a variety of purposes including explanations

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Brainstorm and list multiple ideas for explanation topics relevant and interesting to them.
  2. Identify and select topics that are clear, specific, and suitable for explanation writing.
  3. Work collaboratively to share and refine ideas, demonstrating listening and speaking skills.
  4. Understand the importance of relevance and clarity in explanation topics.

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Large poster paper or chart paper for group brainstorming
  • Sticky notes (2 per student)
  • Topic idea prompts (prepared cards with simple explanation topics)
  • Individual student notebooks or paper
  • Colourful markers or crayons

Lesson Structure (30 minutes)

1. Introduction & Context (5 minutes)

  • Teacher explains:
    • What explanation writing is (brief recap from previous lessons).
    • Why choosing a good topic is important — it must be interesting and clear so readers understand.
    • Example: “How do plants grow?” is a good topic because it's specific and we can explain it clearly.
  • Use a “Think-Pair-Share”:
    • Ask students to think quietly for 1 minute about something they are curious about in the world.
    • Pair up and share their ideas with a partner.

2. Brainstorming Session (12 minutes)

  • Group Activity (in groups of 5-6):

    • Each group is given a large sheet to brainstorm ideas.
    • Students write their ideas on sticky notes (1 idea per note) and stick them on the paper.
    • Encourage ideas related to everyday experiences and interests (e.g., “Why do we have seasons?”, “How do birds fly?”, “Why do we brush our teeth?”).
    • Prompt groups using prepared topic cards if they struggle to start.
    • Teacher circulates, scaffolding ideas and prompting students to think about clarity and relevance.
  • Highlight important features:

    • Teacher models quickly choosing 2-3 best topics from the brainstorm — those that are focused and clear.

3. Selecting Topics (8 minutes)

  • Groups discuss which topic would be best for an explanation and why.
  • Each group selects their favourite topic and prepares to share it.
  • Teacher facilitates reflection questions:
    • Is this topic clear?
    • Can we explain it simply?
    • Is it interesting to us and others?

4. Sharing and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Each group shares their selected topic with the class.
  • Teacher writes these on the board, reinforcing why they make good explanation topics.
  • Wrap-up question: “What did you learn about choosing a good topic for explanation writing?”
  • Teacher praises creativity and clarity.

Differentiation

  • Support for ESL and SEN students:
    • Provide visual aids and example topic cards with pictures.
    • Allow paired/peer support during brainstorming.
  • Extension:
    • Challenge some students to think of “how” or “why” questions related to their chosen topics, preparing them for the next lessons which focus on structuring explanations.

Assessment (Formative)

  • Observation of student participation in brainstorming and discussions.
  • Evaluation of chosen topics for clarity, relevance, and suitability.
  • Teacher anecdotal notes to inform next lesson – support for topic selection and explanation structure.

Teacher Reflection and Notes

  • How engaged were students in selecting topics?
  • Did the brainstorming inspire curiosity?
  • Were students able to explain why their topic choice was suitable?
  • Plan to incorporate student topic choices into upcoming explanation writing lessons for increased motivation and ownership.

This lesson employs collaborative learning, inquiry-based approaches, and reflective discussion aligned with Irish education best practices for 8-9 year olds, providing a dynamic and memorable step in the unit Explaining the World.
