Teaching Instructions

Can you make a lesson for me to teach transition year students who are currently in the middle of their mini company program. They have to develop an idea and act like an entrepreneur. Now that the students in the class have their ideas, I want to do a lesson with them on branding and logo creation for their mini company. Please can you create an engaging fun lesson for 25 students in a 40 minute lesson.

Overview

This 40-minute session is designed for Transition Year students engaged in a mini company programme, focusing on the development of their entrepreneurial ideas. It aims to deepen their understanding of branding and the importance of logo creation, aligned with the Junior Cycle Business Studies curriculum under the IE Curriculum framework. Through interactive activities and collaborative work, students will develop skills in brand identity, creativity, and marketing.

  • Optional: Tablets or laptops with a simple digital design tool (freehand drawing apps or Canva-style tools) – if available and suitable
  • Printouts of famous logos for analysis (optional)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction to Branding (7 minutes)

  • Teacher Input: Define branding in simple terms. Use examples familiar to the students (e.g., well-known Irish companies and logos).
  • Discuss how branding distinguishes products in the marketplace.
  • Highlight the role of logos as a key element of branding.

Activity: Quick Think-Pair-Share

  • Students think individually about a brand they know well and what makes the brand identifiable (logo, colours, slogan, etc.).
  • Share with a partner.
  • Invite 2-3 pairs to share insights with the whole class.

2. Key Elements of a Successful Logo (8 minutes)

  • Present the main elements of effective logos: simplicity, relevance, memorability, versatility, and timelessness.
  • Show printed examples and briefly analyse their strengths.

Interactive Activity: Logo Analysis

  • In small groups (5x5), students examine mini printouts of logos.
  • Groups list the elements they think work well in each logo on sticky notes.
  • Groups post these on the whiteboard under categories like “Simple,” “Memorable,” etc.

3. Logo Creation Workshop (18 minutes)

  • Task Brief: Each mini company designs a logo for their product/service.
  • Encourage students to reflect their company’s values, mission, and target audience.
  • Provide materials for sketching and/or digital options if available.
  • Circulate to prompt and facilitate ideas, encouraging creative thinking and team collaboration.

Teacher Tip: Guide students to consider:

  • Colour psychology (green often represents eco-friendly, red is bold/exciting, etc.)
  • Scalability (will it look good small & large?)
  • Shapes and symbolism relevant to their business theme.

4. Presentation and Feedback (7 minutes)

  • Each group presents their logo concept (2 minutes max each).
  • Peers and teacher give positive, specific feedback focusing on:
    • Clarity of brand message
    • Visual impact
    • Creativity

Assessment and Reflection

  • Formative Assessment: Teacher observes group interactions and evaluates logo sketches against criteria discussed.
  • Self and Peer Assessment: During feedback, students reflect on their ideas and offer constructive comments.
  • Exit Ticket (optional): Each student writes one thing they learned about branding and one thing they want to improve on their logo.

Extension and Homework Ideas

  • Refine the logo digitally using software.
  • Write a brief “Brand Story” that explains their mini company’s mission, values, and how the logo reflects these.
  • Research a local Irish business and present how branding contributes to its success.

Notes for Teachers

  • This lesson blends creativity and entrepreneurial skills explicitly encouraged within the Transition Year mini company framework.
  • It promotes active learning and collaboration, integral to the Junior Cycle approach.
  • Utilizing reflective discussion and peer feedback supports deeper learning and skill development.
  • Encouraging students to think about colour psychology and symbolism aligns well with holistic understanding of business communication.

This engaging, hands-on lesson will help students take ownership of their mini company’s identity, building essential entrepreneurial competences while meeting IE Curriculum standards.
