Teaching Instructions

I want the lesson to focus on a game of "who is it" where students have to guess famous celebrities by what they are wearing. They must use their clothing vocab and the verb "to wear" during it. First, the students will revise their stór focal, by the teacher call out the names of clothes in English and they are to give the correct Irish answer. Then the children will play the game "hotseat", to guess the names of clothes that the children draw for them. Finally, the students will do a game of "who is it" by describing their clothing. The lesson must include strand, strand units and learning outcomes. It must also include a clear introduction, with a WALT, development and conclusion (cognitive and social), along with a transition.

Clothing Guessing Game

Class Details

  • Class: Sixth Class (11-12 years)
  • Subject: Gaeilge (Irish)
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Number of Students: 21

Curriculum Context

Strand and Strand Units

  • Strand: An Ghaeilge sa Ghrúpa (Communicating in Irish)
  • Strand Unit: Teanga ó Bhéal/The Importance of Spoken Language - focussing on oral communication through conversation and games.
  • Learning Outcome:
    • Use familiar language related to personal and familiar topics (e.g., clothing) confidently and accurately in spoken language.
    • Demonstrate understanding and appropriate use of common verbs such as "chaitheamh" (to wear).
    • Engage in interactive oral activities to develop fluency and comprehension in Gaeilge.

Lesson Overview

WALT (We Are Learning To):

  • Léamh, labhairt agus tuiscint a fheabhsú trí úsáid a bhaint as an bhfoclóir éadaí agus an briathar "chaitheamh" i gcluiche idirghníomhach.
  • (Enhance reading, speaking, and understanding by using clothing vocabulary and the verb "to wear" in an interactive game.)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Objective: Revise and consolidate clothing vocabulary and verb "chaitheamh".
  • Activity:
    • The teacher calls out the names of clothing items in English.
    • Students respond with the Irish equivalent, saying the word aloud and spelling it if necessary.
  • Example Clothing Words: hata (hat), léine (shirt), bríste (trousers), sciorta (skirt), geansaí (jumper), bróga (shoes), éadaí (clothes), cóta (coat).
  • Method:
    • Use flashcards or realia (real clothes) for reinforcement.
    • Encourage whole-class choral response, paired repetition to increase confidence.

2. Development (40 minutes)

Activity 1: "Hotseat" Game (15 minutes)

  • Goal: Practice naming clothes actively and develop speed of recall.
  • Instructions:
    • One student sits on the “hotseat” with their back to the board.
    • The teacher or other students draw a clothing item on the board or show a flashcard.
    • The class gives clues and says the name of the clothing in Irish.
    • The student in the hotseat must guess the word; if unsure, they may ask, "Cad é sin?" (What is that?).
  • Differentiation: Use easier or more challenging vocabulary depending on learner confidence.

Transition (2 minutes)

  • Teacher summarises the vocabulary covered and introduces the next activity:
    • “Anois, táimid chun cluiche nua a imirt áit a ndéanfaimid cur síos ar éadaí daoine cáiliúla.”
("Now, we will play a new game where we describe celebrities’ clothing.")

Activity 2: "Who Is It?" Game (23 minutes)

  • Goal: Use clothing vocab and “chaitheamh” verb to describe and guess a famous person.
  • Preparation (before class): Prepare cards with names of famous celebrities known to 6th class students from Irish or international culture (e.g., Beyonce, Cristiano Ronaldo, Taylor Swift) focusing on their iconic clothing styles.
  • Instructions:
    • Split class into pairs or small groups.
    • One student picks a celebrity card but does not reveal it.
    • That student gives a description of what the celebrity is wearing using full sentences in Irish.
      • Example: “Tá léine gheal, bríste dubha, agus bróga bán ar…”
    • The other students ask up to three yes/no questions or guess who it is.
    • Students should use the lingual structure:
“An bhfuil… chaitheamh ag [celebrity]?” (Is [celebrity] wearing…?)
  • Focus: Encourage full sentence answers and questions, model prior to game start.
  • Teacher Role: Monitor groups, provide scaffolding and correction, encourage Irish only communication.

3. Conclusion (8 minutes)

  • Cognitive Review: Recap key vocabulary and the verb “chaitheamh” by doing a quick-fire round where students say sentences about what they or classmates are wearing.
  • Social Reflection: Ask students to share one thing they enjoyed and one new word or phrase learned.
  • Feedback: Teacher gives praise and guidance on progress.
  • Extension Task: Encourage students to use the clothing verb at home by describing outfits of family or friends in Irish for the next class.

Additional Teacher Notes

  • Classroom layout: Arrange desks into a semi-circle to facilitate visibility and group interaction.
  • Use of L1 (English): Limit L1 but allow brief clarifications to maintain confidence.
  • Differentiation: Pair stronger speakers with less confident students; use visual aids intensively.
  • Assessment: Observe oral use of vocabulary and verbs for formative feedback, noting fluency and accuracy.
