Creative Dance Movement

Overview

This 60-minute session introduces 9-10-year-old students (4th class) to creative dance, encouraging individual expression and teamwork through movement. It aligns with the Irish Primary School Curriculum's Physical Education strand, focusing on developing fundamental movement skills, co-ordination, rhythm, and creative self-expression.

This lesson integrates the national curriculum standards for Physical Education, specifically strands on Dance and Movement Exploration. It also aligns with the Whole School Approach to Physical Activity, promoting lifelong enjoyment and engagement in physical movement.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic creative dance movements with changes in rhythm, speed, and level.
  • Work collaboratively with peers to create short dance sequences.
  • Show awareness of space and body control throughout dance activities.
  • Express emotions and ideas through movement in an imaginative way.

Curriculum Links

  • Physical Education Curriculum (DE, Ireland):
    • Strand 3: Dance – explore moving in time to music and using body shapes and patterns.
    • Strand 4: Gymnastics – body awareness and control in movement.
  • Learning Outcomes:
    • Use movement patterns and sequences imaginatively to express an idea or theme
    • Develop coordination, balance and locomotor skills through rhythmic movement
    • Work independently and with others to explore movement possibilities

Resources

  • Open classroom or hall space (enough for 18 students to move freely)
  • Portable speaker or sound system
  • A variety of music genres: classical instrumental, world music, and popular children’s tracks (without lyrics for movement exploration)
  • Scarves or ribbons for visualising movement
  • Cones for marking zones in space
  • Whiteboard and marker

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)

  • Activity: “Movers and Shakers”
Objective: Prepare body and mind for movement.
    Instructions:
    • Begin with gentle stretching: arms, legs, neck, ankles.
    • Transition to dynamic moves: marching on spot, jumping jacks, and shoulder rolls.
    • Introduce changing levels (stretch tall, crouch low) and directions (forward, backward, sideways).
    • Use music to encourage rhythm matching. Choose a slow rhythm first then increase tempo.
    • Encourage students to feel the beat and move fluidly.

2. Movement Exploration (15 minutes)

  • Activity: “Emotion in Motion”
Objective: Express different feelings through dance movements.
    Instructions:
    • Teacher names an emotion (joy, surprise, sadness, excitement).
    • Students use their bodies to show that feeling through movement and facial expression, using space creatively (e.g., large sweeping movements for joy, slow and contained for sadness).
    • Use scarves/ribbons to enhance visual expression—flowing, sharp flicks, etc.
    • Repeat with 3-4 emotions with different music genres matching the emotions for immersive experience.
    • Discuss briefly how different music and movements made them feel.

3. Group Choreography Challenge (20 minutes)

  • Activity: “Create Your Own Dance Story”
Objective: Collaborate to build a short dance sequence incorporating learned movements.
    Instructions:
    • Divide the class into 3 groups of 6 students.
    • Each group chooses a theme for their dance story (e.g., nature, space adventure, friendship).
    • Using scarves and markers for space, students invent a 3-minute dance incorporating rhythm changes, levels, and group formations. Encourage use of contrasting movement qualities (sharp vs. smooth).
    • Teacher circulates to guide and support group creativity.

4. Performance & Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Activity: “Show and Tell Dance”
Objective: Present dance stories and promote feedback in a supportive environment.
    Instructions:
    • Each group performs their dance story for the class.
    • After each performance, the class gives positive feedback focusing on creativity, teamwork, and use of space.
    • Highlight how each group expressed their theme differently.
    • Encourage self-reflection with questions like “What did you enjoy most?” and “What was challenging?”

5. Cool Down and Closing Discussion (5 minutes)

  • Gentle stretching focused on breathing and relaxation.
  • Prompt discussion on how dance made them feel, reinforcing confidence and enjoyment of movement as a healthy activity.
  • Remind students that dance can be a personal form of expression and encourage trying new styles at home.

Assessment

  • Formative throughout: Observe students’ ability to explore movements, work collaboratively, and demonstrate awareness of space and rhythm.
  • Use a simple checklist to mark:
    • Participation and enthusiasm
    • Responsiveness to music/rhythm
    • Creativity in movement
    • Cooperation in group tasks

Differentiation Strategies

  • For students needing support:
    • Provide visual demonstrations and use simpler movements.
    • Pair with a confident peer during group work.
  • For advanced students:
    • Challenge with improvisation prompts (e.g., create movements inspired by unusual objects).
    • Encourage leadership roles during group choreography.

Reflection for Teachers

After the session, reflect on:

  • Engagement levels and how well students connected with emotional expression in dance.
  • Effectiveness of group tasks in building cooperation and creativity.
  • Was the teaching pace comfortable to maintain energy without fatigue?
  • How can the integration of music choice be expanded to heighten sensory experiences in future lessons?

By cultivating creative expression alongside physical skills, this lesson encourages lifelong positive attitudes to physical activity and the arts, fulfilling key aims of the Irish Primary PE Curriculum.
