Lesson Plan Breakdown

1. Warm-Up / Introduction (5 minutes)

• Greet the class in Gaeilge: “Dia daoibh ar maidin!”
• Brief class discussion: Ask students, “Cad a dhéanaimid sa bhaile gach lá?” (What do we do at home every day?)
• Elicit some common daily routine words (e.g., éirí, ithe, fanacht, codladh). Write on the board.
• Explain today’s focus: Listening carefully and speaking confidently about daily routines at home.

2. Listening Activity (10 minutes)

• Introduce the audio clip describing a family’s typical day at home.
• Listen once for gist – whole class listens without interruption.
• Ask comprehension questions to check understanding (e.g., “Cén t-am a dhúisíonn an leanbh?”, “Cad a dhéanann an t-athair sa chóisir?”). Use target language as much as possible.
• Listen a second time; students follow along with printed vocabulary sheet to underline or highlight words they recognise.
• Discuss new phrases or words; clarify meanings and pronunciation.

3. Pair Discussion (10 minutes)

• Distribute prompt cards with questions to encourage students to share their daily routines with a partner (“Cén t-am a éiríonn tú?”, “Cad a itheann tú ar maidin?”, “An gcabhraíonn tú sa teach?”)
• Circulate to monitor and assist pronunciation or structure.
• Encourage use of full sentences in Gaeilge, reinforcing vocabulary and phrases from the audio.
• Example sentence starters on board for support:
  • “Éirím ag a…”
  • “Ithim…”
  • “Cabhraím sa…”

4. Role-Playing Activity (10 minutes)

• Organise pairs or small groups. Each pair role-plays a short dialogue describing their daily routine.
• Use props or flashcards to make it interactive and fun.
• Students practice asking and answering questions from prompt cards.
• Select 2–3 pairs to present their dialogue to the class for peer feedback (e.g., “Bhí sé/sí go hiontach” – "That was great!").

5. Recap and Assessment (5 minutes)

• Quick whole-class quiz game: teacher calls out a routine in English, students respond with Gaeilge sentences (e.g., “I eat breakfast” – “Ithim bricfeasta”).
• Exit tickets: Each student says or writes one sentence about their daily routine in Gaeilge. This can be collected or shared orally.
• Provide positive feedback and praise to develop confidence and motivation.
