Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 2 of 4 in the unit "Easter Printmaking Adventure". Lesson Title: Creating Easter-Themed Stamps Lesson Description: Students will design and carve their own Easter-themed stamps using soft carving blocks. They will learn about the process of transferring their designs onto the blocks and the tools required for carving. This hands-on activity will allow students to express their creativity while preparing for the printing process.

Easter Stamp Creation

Overview

This 60-minute lesson is Lesson 2 of 4 in the unit Easter Printmaking Adventure, designed for sixth class students following the Curriculum Framework for Ireland (IE). Students will engage in designing and carving their own Easter-themed stamps using soft carving blocks. This hands-on practice encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and a foundational understanding of printmaking techniques.

Curriculum Alignment

Strand:

  • Visual arts – Making: Explore and create images informed by observation, imagination, and experience.

Strand Unit:

  • Exploring and using materials and technologies

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Develop ideas through drawing and sketching to plan printmaking designs (Curriculum Objective: VA 6 - MA 2)
  • Use a variety of tools safely and effectively to create an embossed print matrix (Curriculum Objective: VA 6 - MA 3)
  • Demonstrate understanding of positive and negative space in prints (Curriculum Objective: VA 6 - MA 4)
  • Express meaning and personal responses through their artwork (Curriculum Objective: VA 6 - RE 2)
  • Work collaboratively by sharing materials and giving constructive feedback (Curriculum Objective: SPHE)

Learning Objectives

  • Knowledge: Understand the principles of printmaking and the role of stamps in this process.
  • Skills: Design, transfer, and carve a personal Easter-themed stamp using soft carving blocks safely and effectively.
  • Attitudes: Demonstrate care, patience, and responsibility when using art tools and materials. Appreciate the cultural symbolism of Easter through art.

Resources Needed

  • Soft carving blocks (suitable for young learners)
  • Non-toxic carving tools (e.g., linocutters with blunt ends for safety)
  • Pencils and erasers
  • Tracing paper
  • Rulers
  • A4 plain paper for sketching
  • Work mats or boards to protect tables
  • Aprons or protective clothing
  • Paper towels and water for cleaning

Lesson Structure

1. Starter (10 mins)

  • Engage: Begin with a brief discussion around Easter – ask students to name symbols or images related to Easter (e.g., eggs, bunnies, chicks, crosses).
  • Explain: Introduce printmaking and specifically the use of stamps in creating repeated patterns or designs. Show examples of simple prints from stamps (slides or printed samples). Relate this to the previous lesson’s introductory concepts.
  • Ask: What might make a good stamp design? Highlight importance of clear shapes and understanding positive/negative space.

2. Main Activity (40 mins)

Step 1: Designing the Stamp (15 mins)

  • Students use A4 plain paper to sketch Easter-themed designs focusing on bold, simple shapes for easy carving. Emphasise that their design should reflect their personal style and Easter motifs.
  • Circulate to support students with idea development and encourage thinking about how the shape will appear when printed (i.e., reversed image).
  • Once final sketches are approved, students transfer their designs onto tracing paper.

Step 2: Transferring Design (5 mins)

  • Demonstrate how to flip the tracing paper design and rub the pencil side on the soft carving block to transfer the image accurately (mirror image necessary for printing).

Step 3: Carving the Stamp (20 mins)

  • Demonstrate correct and safe use of carving tools, emphasising hand safety and posture.
  • Students carefully carve around the transferred design to leave raised areas that will be inked in next lessons.
  • Teacher and assistants closely supervise, ensuring safety and troubleshooting difficulties.
  • Encourage students to test small areas if time permits.

3. Plenary (10 mins)

  • Gather students to reflect on the experience: What challenges did they face? What did they enjoy?
  • Reinforce vocabulary: positive and negative spaces, print matrix, stamp.
  • Explain briefly what will happen in Lesson 3 (using their stamps to print).
  • Collect tools and clean up collaboratively to reinforce care of materials.

Assessment for Learning

  • Formative Assessment: Teacher observes students’ design decisions, carving techniques, and application of safety rules during activities.
  • Questioning: Check for understanding of positive/negative space and the printmaking process through verbal Q&A at plenary.
  • Peer Feedback: Encourage students to share one positive comment about a peer’s design to foster confidence and collaborative spirit.

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide pre-drawn simpler outlines for students needing assistance in transferring designs. Offer one-to-one guidance with carving tools.
  • Challenge: Encourage advanced students to add intricate Easter details or experiment with layering patterns for future lessons.

Health and Safety

  • Provide safety briefing on handling carving tools.
  • Ensure work area is clear and well-lit.
  • Maintain protective clothing use and hand-washing after activity.

Reflection for Teacher

Post-lesson, reflect on:

  • How effectively did students handle tools and understand the printmaking concept?
  • Which support strategies worked best?
  • Were students engaged and creative in their designs?
  • How can the connection between design and carving be reinforced or enriched in future lessons?

This plan supports students’ holistic development, creativity, and hands-on skills in line with the IE Curriculum Framework, connecting cultural themes to artistic expression.
