Exploring Easter Rhythms

Overview

This 30-minute music lesson for second-class students focuses on listening to music that relates to Easter, analysing tempo, and expressing feelings associated with the music. It encourages active participation, higher-order thinking, and emotional engagement.

Materials Needed

• Audio clips of Easter-themed music (varying tempos)
• Whiteboard and markers
• Visual aids (images related to Easter, emotional expression cards)

Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Greeting and Warm-Up: Begin with a collective greeting. Use a rhythmic clapping pattern that students will repeat, introducing them to the concept of tempo.

Listening Activity (15 minutes)

1. Play Music Clips: Select three pieces of Easter-themed music (e.g., an upbeat hymn, a serene classical piece, and a playful children's song). Play each clip for about 3-4 minutes.

2. Discussion After Each Clip:

   • Clip 1 (Upbeat Hymn):
     • Ask: "How does this music make you feel? Is it happy or sad?"
     • Encourage higher-order questioning: "What words would you use to describe the tempo?"
   • Clip 2 (Serene Classical):
     • Ask: "What do you imagine when you hear this piece? Can you see any colours or images in your mind?"
     • Use open-ended questions: "In what situations would you listen to this music? Why?”
   • Clip 3 (Playful Children’s Song):
     • Ask: "How does the tempo change your mood?"
     • Engage further: "Can you think of a story that this music could tell?"

Class Discussion (5 minutes)

• Reflective Sharing: Invite students to share their thoughts about the music in a circle.
  • Ask: "What was your favourite piece and why?"
  • Encourage connections to Easter: "How do you think this music connects to the celebration of Easter?"

Emotional Expression Activity (5 minutes)

• Emotion Cards: Distribute cards with different emotions written on them (e.g., Joyful, Calm, Excited, Sad).
• Group Expression: Let students pick a card and share a piece of music they think matches their emotion. Prompt them with: "How does the rhythm of the music relate to the emotion on your card?"

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• Recap and Exit: Summarise the main ideas discussed in class about tempo and feelings in music. Invite each student to say one word that describes how they feel about the music listened to today.

Assessment

• Monitor student participation during discussions and emotional expression to assess their understanding of tempo and feelings.
• Use their responses to Open-Ended Questions from Bloom’s Taxonomy to evaluate higher-order thinking.

Differentiation

• Provide additional support for students who may struggle with the emotional expression by using visual aids to connect feelings with music.
• Encourage advanced students to lead discussions or pose their own questions to the class.
