Exploring Irish Environments

Lesson Overview

This 45-minute lesson introduces fourth class students (aged 9-10) to the different types of environments found in Ireland and other parts of the world, with a special focus on the Giant’s Causeway as a unique natural site. The lesson develops awareness of physical geography and encourages curiosity and respect for natural landscapes, aligning with the Geography curriculum in the Primary School Curriculum (1999) and the Framework for Junior Cycle – Learning in Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE).

Learning Intentions

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Identify and describe different types of environments found in Ireland (coastal, rural, urban, boglands, etc.).
• Recognise the Giant’s Causeway as an example of a coastal environment with unique geological features.
• Compare environments in Ireland to other parts of the world.
• Develop observational and descriptive skills through interactive discussion and activities.

Materials Needed

• Large map of Ireland (classroom-sized or projected)
• Images/slides of the Giant’s Causeway and other Irish environments (farm, bogland, urban area)
• Comparison images of environments from other countries (desert, rainforest, mountain)
• Printed coloured hexagonal shapes (to mimic Giant’s Causeway stones)
• Whiteboard and markers
• Worksheet for drawing and writing about environments (provided in class)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction and Settling (5 minutes)

• Welcome class and briefly outline the lesson topic: Types of environments in Ireland and beyond.
• Activate prior knowledge by asking: “Can you name some places you know in Ireland? What are they like?”
• Introduce Giant’s Causeway as a famous natural place on the Irish coast. Show a photo and ask if anyone has visited or heard of it.

2. Exploring Irish Environments (15 minutes)

• Use the large map of Ireland and point out the location of the Giant’s Causeway.
• Show images of different Irish environments (coast, bog, farmland, urban area).

Teacher-led discussion:

• What do you notice about these places?
• What animals or plants might live there?
• How do people use or live in these environments?

Interactive element:

• Pass around the paper hexagonal shapes representing the Giant’s Causeway stones.
• Invite students to build their own mini Giant’s Causeway on their desks, noticing the hexagonal pattern—a great tactile connection.

3. Comparing Environments Worldwide (10 minutes)

• Introduce images of different environments from around the world: desert, rainforest, mountains.
• Compare and contrast these to Irish environments.
• Highlight how Ireland’s climate and geography shape its natural environments.

Class Discussion:

• Which environments would you like to visit and why?
• Why do you think the Giant’s Causeway looks so different from a rainforest or desert?

4. Activity: Draw and Describe (10 minutes)

• Hand out worksheets for students to:
  • Draw their favourite Irish environment (coast, bog, farmland, urban, or Giant’s Causeway).
  • Write or dictate 2-3 sentences describing what they drew and why they like it.

Support strategies:

• Provide vocabulary prompts on the board (rocky, green, wet, cold, animals, plants).
• Pair weaker writers with a buddy or allow them to dictate sentences.

• Invite 3-4 volunteers to share their drawings and descriptions with the class.
