Lesson Breakdown

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Teacher welcomes the Garda guest and introduces them to the class.
  • Explain the purpose of the visit: to learn about what a Garda does and listen to stories from their everyday work.
  • Brief discussion to activate prior knowledge: Ask students what they know about the Gardaí and their role.

2. Garda Stories (20 minutes)

  • The Garda shares 3 short, age-appropriate stories about their experiences that highlight:
    • Helping people in the community
    • Keeping everyone safe
    • An interesting or kind act they performed as part of their job
  • Throughout the storytelling, the Garda may show any relevant props or pictures (e.g., Garda hat, badge).
  • Students encouraged to listen carefully as there will be an activity to follow based on these stories.

3. Recap and Discussion (7 minutes)

  • Teacher facilitates a brief Q&A session with the students to recall and clarify points from the stories.
  • Use guiding questions such as:
    • What did the Garda do to help people?
    • How do you think the Garda felt in their story?
    • Why is it important to have Gardaí in our community?

4. Storyboard Activity (15 minutes)

  • Each student receives a storyboard sheet divided into 4 boxes.
  • Instructions: Draw pictures in each box summarising one key part of the Garda’s stories (e.g., meeting people, helping someone, feeling happy/proud, the Garda’s uniform).
  • Students encouraged to use crayons/markers and colours to express their understanding creatively.
  • Teacher and Garda circulate to support and ask prompting questions.
  • After drawing, a few students can volunteer to explain their storyboards in 1-2 sentences.

5. Closing Reflection and Feedback (3 minutes)

  • Gather students in a circle and invite 2-3 children to share one thing they learned or liked the most.
  • Close by thanking the Garda for their visit and reinforce the importance of community helpers.

Assessment

  • Formative assessment through observation of students’ listening and participation during storytelling and discussion.
  • Review of storyboards to assess comprehension and ability to recall key concepts from the Garda’s stories.
  • Oral feedback during closing reflection to gauge understanding and engagement.

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • Provide extra visual supports or scribe assistance for students who need help expressing their ideas in drawings or speech.
  • Use simple, clear language throughout and check understanding frequently.
  • Encourage peer support during drawing activity.

Extension Ideas

  • Create a classroom “Community Helpers” wall with photos and drawings from the lesson and other helpers (e.g., firefighters, nurses).
  • Arrange a follow-up visit or virtual tour of a Garda station.
  • Integrate with SPHE lessons on safety and trust.

This lesson offers a memorable interactive experience that connects history learning with real-life community roles, building foundational historical thinking as per the Irish curriculum.
