Teaching Instructions

i want the lesson plan to focus on a 5th class maths lesson on money, practising multiplication and division of money. I want 3 SMART learning objectives. The lesson will include a puzzle to start, questions in the maths book and a worksheet as the main development. I need a lower order and a higher order question for the intro, development and conclusion. I also need a few example of words that will be learned during this lesson. If you have any fun games/activites to start or end the lesson include them too please

Overview

This 45-minute lesson supports 5th Class students in developing their skills in multiplying and dividing money amounts. It is aligned with the Ireland Primary Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, specifically the strand unit on money and number operations.

Curriculum Links

  • Strand Unit: Money
  • Strand Unit: Number Operations
  • Strand: Number (Primary Curriculum, 5th Class)
  • Learning Outcome References:
    • M5NL15: Use multiplication and division effectively to solve real-life problems involving money
    • M5NL17: Apply mental and written strategies to calculate with money
  • Key Competencies:
    • Communication - Expressing mathematical thinking verbally and in writing
    • Problem Solving - Applying strategies in unfamiliar contexts
    • Numeracy - Fluency with number operations involving money

SMART Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Multiply and divide money amounts within €0.01 to €100 using mental and written methods with 90% accuracy (Specific, Measurable).
  2. Interpret word problems involving multiplication and division of money and choose appropriate operations to solve them (Achievable, Relevant).
  3. Explain their reasoning clearly for at least one complex word problem involving money, demonstrating logical thinking and mathematical vocabulary (Time-bound: within this lesson).

Vocabulary to Learn

  • Multiply
  • Divide
  • Amount
  • Cost
  • Total
  • Change
  • Budget
  • Transaction

Lesson Structure

Starter (10 minutes) — Money Puzzle Challenge

  • Activity: Present a money puzzle on the whiteboard.
Puzzle example: “If you buy 3 chocolate bars costing €1.75 each, how much do you pay?”
  • Lower Order Question: What is the cost of one chocolate bar? (Recall)
  • Higher Order Question: How would the total cost change if you bought 5 bars instead of 3? Explain your thinking. (Application/Analysis)
  • Students discuss with a partner, then share answers with the class to engage communication skills.
  • Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and introduce multiplication of money in a real context.

Development (25 minutes) — Practice with Book Questions & Worksheet

  • Book Questions (15 mins): Use tailored questions from the class maths book focusing on multiplying and dividing money.
    • Lower Order Question: Multiply €4.50 by 3. What is the total?
    • Higher Order Question: A toy costs €12.60. If you divide this money between 4 friends equally, how much does each friend get? Show your working.
  • Worksheet (10 mins): Students complete a differentiated worksheet combining:
    • Multiplying money amounts by whole numbers
    • Dividing money amounts into equal parts
    • Word problems requiring reasoning about costs and change
  • Teacher circulates to support, encourage use of correct vocabulary, and challenge deeper thinking.

Conclusion (10 minutes) — Money Maths Game & Reflection

  • Game: “Shopkeeper’s Challenge” — Students work in pairs with play money, alternating roles as customer and shopkeeper. They must calculate totals and change using multiplication/division in real-time.
  • Lower Order Question: If a customer buys 2 items costing €3.50 each, how much do they pay?
  • Higher Order Question: If a customer pays with €20 and the total is €13.80, how much change should they receive? What strategy can you use to calculate this quickly?
  • Reflection: Students share one new term they learned and explain one thing they found tricky or enjoyable about the lesson.
  • Teacher provides feedback and addresses misconceptions.

Assessment and Differentiation

  • Observe student responses during partner and group discussions to assess understanding.
  • Use worksheet answers to gauge individual mastery (higher and lower order question sets).
  • Provide extension tasks for faster learners involving multi-step problems or budgeting scenarios.
  • Support students needing extra help with visual representations and manipulatives (coins, play money).

Materials Required

  • Class maths books with money exercises
  • Printed worksheets
  • Play money (coins and bills) for the game
  • Whiteboard and markers

Teacher Tips

  • Encourage use of euro notation (€) consistently, reinforcing currency literacy.
  • Promote mental maths strategies, such as doubling or halving, to build fluency.
  • Use real-life scenarios like shopping or budgeting to make problems relatable.
  • Foster a collaborative classroom environment where students explain their reasoning aloud.

This lesson plan blends curriculum-aligned objectives with engaging, age-appropriate activities that embed multiplication and division of money naturally in students’ learning experiences, helping them become confident, mathematically competent young people.
