Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Gather students and introduce the theme: Irish Mythical Creatures and Legends.
• Briefly explain how stories and legends form an important part of Irish history and culture, helping us understand beliefs and people’s imaginations long ago.
• Outline the group activity: each group will research a given creature and create a detailed poster to present their findings.

2. Group Formation and Topic Allocation (5 minutes)

• Divide class into five groups of three students each (15 pupils total).
• Assign each group one mythical creature or legend from the list below:

  • Discuss and decide what to include on their poster.
• Teacher circulates to support and prompt critical thinking with questions such as:
  • Why do you think this creature was important in Irish folklore?
  • How might people long ago have reacted to stories of this creature?
  • Can you think of modern stories or customs inspired by your creature?

4. Poster Creation (10 minutes)

• Groups create a colourful poster based on the following criteria (checklist provided):

5. Group Presentations and Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

• Each group quickly presents their poster (max 1 minute each).
• Teacher highlights connections between myth and history, reinforcing the cultural heritage aspect.
• Quick reflective question to whole class:
  • “Which creature would you like to learn more about and why?”
