Teaching Instructions

The kids have already done a freeze frame so I would love to add to this or do a new activity. The class is only 40 mins. It must be on the theme of Mythology.

Mythical Drama Adventure

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Create and perform short scenes inspired by various mythological characters.
  2. Understand key themes and morals present in mythology.
  3. Collaborate effectively in small groups.

Curriculum Framework

This lesson aligns with the Irish Primary School Curriculum, specifically focusing on the Drama strand of the Arts Curriculum, where students are encouraged to explore a variety of texts and themes in drama through imagination and creativity.

Learning Outcomes

  • Exploration of Ideas: Students will apply personal experiences and imagination to create dramatic representations of mythological themes.
  • Communication Skills: Through group discussions and presentations, students will enhance verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Materials Needed

  • Mythology texts (books or printed handouts summarising various myths)
  • Large space for performance (classroom or hall)
  • Props for group performances (optional, e.g., masks, capes)
  • Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

  1. Warm-up Activity (5 minutes):

    • Begin with a quick “emotion charade” where students express different emotions related to mythological contexts (e.g., anger, bravery, joy) using their bodies and faces.
    • Encourage students to think of how these emotions are portrayed in myths.
  2. Discussion (5 minutes):

    • Introduce the theme of mythology. Ask students to share any mythical stories they know (e.g., Greek myths, Irish legends).
    • Highlight a few key themes in myths such as heroism, morality, and supernatural events.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

Group Performance Creation (20 minutes):

  1. Divide the Class: Split the students into groups of 4-5. This allows for 4-5 groups total.
  2. Mythological Character Assignment: Give each group a different mythological character or story (e.g., Hercules, Cuchulainn, Medusa, etc.). Provide brief summaries to help guide them.
  3. Scene Creation: Each group has 15 minutes to create a short scene (1-2 minutes long) showcasing their character or story’s features, focusing on key emotions and actions. They should decide:
    • The context of their scene
    • Key dialogues or actions to portray
    • How they can creatively use body language and space.

Performance Showcase (5 minutes):

  1. Each group will present their scene to the class.
  2. Encourage the audience to respond with ‘frozen applause’ (students freeze clap) at each performance, reinforcing appreciation and focus.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Reflection Circle: Bring the students back together for a reflection discussion about what they learned.

    • Ask guiding questions such as:
      • What was the most exciting part of your scene?
      • How did working together help you create your performance?
      • What did you learn about the myths you portrayed?
  2. Wrap-up: Emphasize the importance of mythology in understanding human emotions, cultures, and values.

Assessment

  • Observational assessment of group participation, collaboration, and creativity during scene creation and performance.
  • Verbal feedback from peers during the reflection circle to enhance communication skills.

Differentiation

  • Provide additional support and role prompts for students who may struggle with creativity.
  • Encourage advanced students to add complexity to their scenes by integrating additional characters or excerpts from the myths.

Extension Activity

For students wanting to explore further, assign them to write a short paragraph about a mythological character they are interested in, explaining the moral or lesson of that myth and how it relates to modern life.

This lesson plan combines creative expression with critical thinking, making it an engaging experience for students while aligning well with the educational standards in Ireland.
