Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

• Starter Activity:
  Pose a quick mental arithmetic challenge involving decimal addition and subtraction (e.g., 4.7 + 3.25). Ask students to solve it mentally or using a mini whiteboard.
  Discuss any challenges briefly, linking to previous lessons.

• Set the Context:
  Explain that today’s focus is on solving problems involving fractions and decimals using all four operations, something they will use in everyday life and higher maths.

• Recall Key Concepts:
  Using fraction strips and decimal grids, briefly review the concepts of equivalent fractions and place value to support operations and understanding.

2. Guided Practice – Word Problems (15 minutes)

• Using word problem cards, students work in pairs to solve problems that require addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals.
• Problems will start with simple contexts (e.g., cooking recipes, shopping money) and progress to slightly complex multi-step problems.
• Teacher circulates, supporting pairs, asking questions to prompt reasoning ("How did you find a common denominator?" / "Why did you line up the decimal points?").
• Pairs are asked to explain their reasoning to the class briefly after solving one problem each to develop communication competencies.
