Learning Intention

Students will be able to discuss the causes and effects of the poverty cycle, including the factors increasing housing costs, family type, economic recession and unemployment, social problems, lack of education, social policy, and the poverty trap. They will also explore the effects such as debt, depression and destructive habits, social isolation, relationship problems, decline in standard of living, and educational disadvantage.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Briefly explain the purpose of today’s lesson: to understand why poverty persists and its impact.

• Introduce the jigsaw method: each student will become an ‘expert’ on one cause or effect and then teach it to their group.

• Divide the class into 5 expert groups, each with 4 students.

• Assign each group 1 topic from causes and effects:

  Causes:

  1. Increasing housing costs
  2. Family type and economic recession/unemployment
  3. Social problems/social policy
  4. Lack of education
  5. The poverty trap and poverty cycle

  Effects:

  1. Debt, depression, and destructive habits
  2. Social isolation
  3. Relationship problems
  4. Decline in standard of living
  5. Educational disadvantage

Note: To fit with 20 students and the jigsaw method, consolidate into 5 groups focusing alternately on causes and effects, two subtopics per group.

2. Expert Group Work (10 minutes)

• Students read and discuss their information sheet in their expert group.
• Encourage use of group discussion to clarify points and prepare explanations.
• Each group creates a simple summary poster or notes covering key points, causes or effects assigned.

3. Jigsaw Teaching Groups (15 minutes)

• Rearrange students into 4 new groups, with one member from each expert group per new group (each group now covers all topics).
• Each expert teaches their peers their specialised knowledge (about 3 minutes each).
• Other members listen, ask clarifying questions.
• Group members collaborate to write a cohesive cause-effect poverty cycle explanation on a flip chart or whiteboard.

4. Whole Class Sharing and Reflection (7 minutes)

• Each jigsaw group presents their summary of causes and effects of poverty.
• Teacher facilitates a short discussion, linking comments to real-life Irish social contexts.
• Highlight connections and cyclical nature of poverty to deepen understanding.
• Prompt reflection: How might knowledge of these causes and effects influence attitudes or policies?

5. Assessment (3 minutes)

• Exit ticket: On a small card, students write one new thing they learned about the poverty cycle and one question they still have.
• Collect cards for informal assessment of understanding and to guide future lessons.
