Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to focus on recount writing and how the students can identify which part of a recount different phrases belong to, maybe through interactive games (any free websites?). Also a focus on the 5 Ws

Overview

This 40-minute lesson is designed for Fifth Class students (aged 10-11) and focuses on developing their recount writing abilities as per the IE Curriculum framework. The lesson emphasises understanding the structure of a recount, recognising different parts through phrases, and deepening comprehension of the 5 Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why). Interactive, technology-enhanced games are integrated to motivate and engage all 24 students in a collaborative, hands-on approach.

Curriculum Alignment

Curriculum Strand:

  • English: Writing
  • Strand Unit: Developing competence in writing through imaginative and functional texts, including recounts.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Compose a clear, structured recount with an orientation, series of events, and a conclusion.
  • Identify and use the 5 Ws to establish context and detail in recount writing.
  • Recognise different phrases and classify them into their respective parts of a recount.
  • Use interactive and peer activities to scaffold writing skills.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Comprehension and understanding of text structure.
  • Critical thinking for sorting and categorising information.
  • Collaborative learning and digital literacy through web-based games.
  • Oral communication through class discussion and feedback.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the three key parts of a recount: Orientation, Events, and Conclusion.
  2. Recognise the 5 Ws within sample phrases related to recount texts.
  3. Categorise sample phrases into the correct part of a recount using interactive games.
  4. Apply their understanding to draft an outline for a short recount based on a personal experience.

Resources Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Pre-prepared cards with phrases for recount parts and 5 Ws
  • Tablets or PCs (one per pair of students) with access to free interactive quiz/game platforms (e.g., quiz-type games that teachers can adapt without needing sign-up, or simple online sorting games)
  • Copies of a short model recount text

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Briefly introduce recount writing: purpose and structure (Orientation, Events, Conclusion).
  • Write the 5 Ws on the board and briefly explain each (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
  • Use a quick oral example (e.g., recounting a recent school event) and ask volunteers to identify the 5 Ws in the story.

2. Exploration & Identification (10 minutes)

  • Distribute cards with phrases taken from a model recount (some Orientation, some Events, some Conclusion).
  • In pairs, students will sort these phrase cards into the correct part of a recount.
  • Circulate and discuss answers; clarify misconceptions.
  • Highlight how different phrases contain one or more of the 5 Ws.

3. Interactive Game: Phrase Sorting Challenge (15 minutes)

  • Using tablets/PCs, students work in pairs to access a teacher-prepared interactive game
(e.g., a drag-and-drop game where they sort phrases into Orientation, Events, Conclusion, or identify which 5 W they relate to).
  • The game will have levels increasing in difficulty: initially sorting recount parts, then identifying 5 Ws within phrases, and combining both skills.
  • Points or badges can be earned to motivate engagement (no personal data required).
  • After the game, conduct a short class reflection, asking pairs to share tricky phrases and solutions.

4. Application: Drafting a Recount Outline (7 minutes)

  • Give students a simple prompt (e.g., “Describe your favourite holiday”) and instruct them to write down a brief outline including:
    • Orientation (Who, What, Where, When)
    • Key Events (in sequence)
    • Conclusion (Why it was memorable or how they felt)
  • Emphasise using the 5 Ws to guide their outline.

5. Conclusion & Assessment (3 minutes)

  • Ask 3-4 students to share their outline briefly.
  • Summarise the importance of using the 5 Ws and structuring recounts clearly.
  • Provide positive verbal feedback based on accuracy in outlining parts of a recount and use of 5 Ws.
  • Inform students their outline will be the foundation for their next recount writing assignment.

Differentiation

  • Support weaker writers by pairing them with stronger students during activities.
  • Provide phrase cards with simple structures for those who need it.
  • Challenge advanced learners by encouraging them to include additional adverbials or connectives in their outlines.

Assessment

Formative assessment will occur through:

  • Observation during card sorting and interactive game play.
  • Oral questioning during introduction and reflection.
  • Review of the recount outline for correct identification of parts and inclusion of the 5 Ws.

Teacher Reflection & Tips

  • Prior to the lesson, test the chosen interactive platform to ensure ease of access and functionality without login barriers.
  • Use real-life examples or school events to make recounts relatable.
  • Encourage students to think critically about what makes a good recount, helping them not only categorise but understand purpose.
  • Revisit the lesson concepts through follow-up writing assignments and peer review sessions.

This lesson plan balances curriculum compliance with creative engagement, integrating digital tools and collaborative work to enhance both literacy and critical thinking skills in Fifth Class students.
