Shape Constellations

Overview

This 30-minute session is lesson 3 of 5 in the unit Shapes in Space Adventure. It aims to develop students’ spatial awareness and fine motor skills through imaginative exploration of shapes and constellations. Students will learn to identify, connect, and create shapes in meaningful, playful contexts inspired by space. This lesson aligns with the Irish Primary Curriculum Framework (IE) for Mathematics, specifically within the Geometry strand for 3rd–4th class.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Engage students by briefly discussing constellations in the night sky and how stars connect to form pictures.
• Show a simple constellation made from connected dots (e.g., The Big Dipper).
• Explain that today they will explore shapes by connecting dots and making their own “shape constellations.”

2. Guided Activity: Dot-to-Dot Shape Constellations (10 minutes)

• Hand out the dot-to-dot worksheets featuring space-themed shapes made of dots positioned to form geometric shapes.
• Model completing one by drawing lines between the dots and naming the shapes formed. Emphasise vertices and edges.
• Students complete the worksheets individually or in pairs, helping each other connect the dots and recognise shapes.
• Circulate, provide support, and reinforce common shape vocabulary.

3. Hands-on Creative Task: Constructing Constellations (12 minutes)

• Introduce the cutout shapes and strings as “stars and lines.”
• Students select 4-5 shape cutouts to create their own constellation.
• Using string, they connect the shapes on their desk or board with tape or sticky tack to physically construct and visualise their constellation.
• Encourage imaginative naming and storytelling about their constellation to embed language and creativity.

4. Sharing & Reflection (3 minutes)

• Invite volunteers to briefly present their constellation, identifying shapes and explaining their star connections.
• Reinforce learning by highlighting use of shape names and spatial reasoning.
• Recap key ideas: shapes can connect like stars to make patterns and stories.

• Formative Assessment: Observe students’ ability to connect dots accurately and identify shapes during guided activity.
• Peer Assessment: During sharing, encourage positive feedback on constellation creativity and shape use.
