I want to create a fun lesson for third class on sun protection and uv rays

Sun Protection Awareness

Overview

Duration: 35 minutes
Class: Third Class (8-9 years old)
Class Size: 23 students
Subject: Geography – Environmental Awareness
Curriculum References:

  • Primary School Curriculum (Ireland), Geography Strand Unit: Environmental Awareness and Care
  • SESE (Social, Environmental and Scientific Education) guidelines
  • Health Education Strand: Myself – Safety and Protection

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand what UV rays are and their effects on the skin.
  • Learn why sun protection is important.
  • Identify various methods of protecting oneself from the sun.
  • Develop a positive attitude towards adopting sun-safe behaviours.

Learning Intentions

By the end of this lesson, pupils will:

  • Know that the sun emits UV rays which can harm our skin.
  • Understand simple and practical ways to protect themselves from the sun.
  • Recognise that protecting their skin from the sun helps keep them healthy.
  • Have fun engaging with activities that reinforce sun safety messages.

Success Criteria

  • Pupils can explain UV rays in simple terms.
  • Pupils can list at least three ways to protect themselves from the sun.
  • Pupils participate actively in interactive activities.

Resources Needed

  • Large colourful UV ray diagram/chart showing the sun and the Earth
  • Play UV "ray" flashcards (sun, hat, sunscreen, shade, sunglasses)
  • Sun-safe props: wide-brim hats, sunglasses, sunscreen bottles (empty or real for demonstration)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • “Sun Safety” worksheet (illustrated fill-in-the-blanks or matching activity) – Optional
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Stickers/star stamps for reward

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Warm-up (5 minutes)

  • Starter question: “Who likes to play outside on sunny days?”
  • Brief discussion: “Did you know the sun sends out invisible rays called UV rays? What do you think they do?” Encourage guesses.
  • Show the UV ray chart: explain UV rays are part of sunlight that can hurt our skin if we don’t protect ourselves.

2. Interactive Story Time (7 minutes)

  • Tell a short story about a character (Ollie the Owl or Sunny the Squirrel) who learns about being sun-safe.
  • Ollie loves playing outside but didn’t wear a hat or sunscreen and got a sunburn.
  • Ollie teachers others how to use hats, sunscreen, and shade to stay safe.
  • After the story, ask: “What can we learn from Ollie?”

3. UV Ray Game: “Catch the Rays!” (10 minutes)

  • Divide class into 2 groups (about 11-12 pupils each) standing opposite each other.
  • Each group has flashcards: sun, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, shade.
  • Call out "UV rays!" – pupils with sun cards step forward and say one fact about UV rays from the lesson.
  • Call out “Protect!” – pupils with protection cards share how that item helps protect us.
  • Encourage lively participation, moving around, and explaining why their card is important.
  • Use a timer and rotate players to keep pace fun and inclusive.

4. Practical Demonstration (5 minutes)

  • Show how to apply sunscreen properly, including explaining high SPF.
  • Demonstrate wearing a wide-brim hat and sunglasses.
  • Create a shaded spot with an umbrella or within the classroom. Explain benefits of shade.
  • Encourage pupils to relate this to times they are outside (playtime, school outings, etc.)

5. Consolidation Activity (5 minutes)

  • Hand out the “Sun Safety” worksheet (simple matching pictures of sun protection to their descriptions or fill in blanks with words like "hat," "shade," "sunscreen").
  • Pupils complete individually or in pairs.
  • Walk around providing support where needed.

6. Wrap-up and Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Recap: “Name one thing you can do to protect yourself from the sun.”
  • Praise effort, distribute stickers/star stamps for participation.
  • Remind pupils to practice sun safety daily, especially on sunny days.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Support: Provide visual flashcards or one-to-one help for pupils who find reading difficult.
  • Extension: Challenge more able pupils to explain why UV rays can be dangerous or create their own sun protection poster at home.

Assessment & Feedback

  • Informal assessment during games and discussion – note pupils’ understanding and participation.
  • Review worksheet answers to identify any misconceptions.
  • Use verbal praise and positive reinforcement to encourage sun safety habits.

Notes for Teachers

  • Prioritise a playful and engaging tone to foster an emotionally positive association with sun safety.
  • Link lesson to cross-curricular areas such as Health Education and SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education).
  • Encourage children to share knowledge with family as homework: for example, reminding parents about applying sunscreen for outings.
  • This lesson supports the National Childcare and Primary Curriculum’s emphasis on environmental awareness and personal wellbeing.

By blending story-telling, movement games, practical demonstrations, and cognitive tasks, this lesson aims to effectively embed vital sun safety knowledge while catering to young children’s developmental needs according to Irish educational standards.
