This 30-minute lesson introduces first-class students (aged 6–7) to simple Gaeilge vocabulary related to the home environment, focusing on four key words: fuinneog (window), doras (door), simléar (chimney), and cistin (kitchen). The lesson aligns closely with the Curriculum Framework for Gaeilge in Ireland, emphasising oral language development, vocabulary acquisition, and visual recognition skills.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 mins)

• Greet the class in Gaeilge using simple phrases (Dia dhuit, a pháistí!)
• Introduce the topic: "Inniu foghlaimímid focail faoin teach." (Today we learn words about the house.)
• Show the first slide with a picture of a fuinneog and say the word clearly multiple times, encouraging choral repetition.
• Repeat for doras, simléar, and cistin.

2. PowerPoint Presentation with Vocabulary (10 mins)

• Present each slide showing a clear, colourful picture alongside its Gaeilge word (e.g., a bright image of a window with fuinneog underneath).
• For each, the teacher models pronunciation slowly and clearly; the class repeats as a group and individually.
• Include short, simple sentences orally, e.g., "Seo an fuinneog." (This is the window.)
• Engage the students by asking: An féidir leat an doras a fháil? (Can you find the door?) pointing to the picture.

3. Matching Activity (10 mins)

• Use PowerPoint slides with mixed pictures and words. On one side are the pictures, on the other the words scrambled.
• Teacher calls on students to come up and draw a line (or drag on interactive board) matching the correct Gaeilge word to the corresponding picture.
• For class engagement, students can say the word aloud before matching.
• If technology is limited, use printed cards to do the same activity in small groups or pairs, reinforcing peer learning.

4. Review and Assessment (5 mins)

• Quick oral quiz: show a picture and ask, Cad é seo? (What is this?)
• Individual students answer by saying the Gaeilge word.
• Provide positive feedback and correct gently if needed.
• Praise all attempts to boost confidence.
