Introduction (10 minutes)

Stimulus:

  • Show a colourful picture of Tenochtitlán (the Aztec capital) and an image of Aztec farmers on chinampas (floating gardens).
  • Play a short audio clip of traditional Aztec music/chant or a sound related to Aztec market life (optional).

Elicit Prior Knowledge:

  • Ask: "Have you heard of the Aztecs before? What do you already know about them?"
  • List responses on the board to connect their existing ideas with new learning.

Share Learning Intention:

  • “Today we will learn about the Aztecs – an amazing ancient civilisation from Central America.”
  • “We will find out what their lives were like.”
  • “We will also put them on a timeline and finish with a fun quiz in groups.”

Development (20 minutes)

Key Activity 1: Note-taking on Aztec Life (15 mins)

  • Present information in short, engaging chunks:

    1. Where did the Aztecs live? - Near modern-day Mexico City, on islands in a lake.
    2. Homes and cities: Built Tenochtitlán with canals and temples.
    3. Food: Grew maize, beans, and used chinampas (floating gardens).
    4. Culture and clothing: Wore colourful clothes, had markets, and celebrated festivals.
    5. Achievements: Made canoes, built pyramids, wrote codices.
  • Pupils copy 4-5 key points in their notebooks using bullet points or simple sentences.

  • Use visual aids: pictures, labelled diagrams, and a simple timeline showing where Aztecs fit historically (after Mesopotamia, alongside Ancient Egyptians, before modern times).

  • Invite brief pair discussion for pupils to share one new fact with a partner.

Conclusion (10 minutes)

Cognitive: Group Quiz

  • Divide the class into 5 groups of 5-6 pupils.
  • Ask 5 short quiz questions based on the lesson (e.g. "What food did Aztecs grow?" / "What was the name of the Aztec capital?").
  • Groups discuss each question, then share answers out loud.
  • Award points to groups for correct answers to encourage participation.

Social:

  • Praise teamwork and listening skills during quiz
  • Encourage pupils to clap for each group’s efforts to foster a positive classroom atmosphere

Transition:

  • Summarise key points briefly, linking back to timeline and how history helps us understand people from long ago.
  • “Next time, we might learn about other ancient peoples like the Mayans or the Incas.”
