Curriculum Alignment: IE Curriculum Framework (Art)

Strand: Drawing and Painting
Strand Unit: Creating with Materials
Learning Objectives:

  • Explore and experiment with different painting techniques using watercolours (Drawing and Painting, Level 1).
  • Develop observational skills by discussing shape, form, and detail in artworks (Visual Arts, Responding to Art, Level 1).
  • Express ideas and feelings through personal watercolour creations inspired by professional artists (Expressing, Creating, and Appreciating, Level 1).

Cross-Curricular Links:

  • Language: Describing and discussing artwork to develop vocabulary and verbal articulation skills.
  • Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE): Encouraging creativity and self-expression.

Learning Intentions

  • To understand and identify key features in Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral and landscape paintings.
  • To practise basic watercolour techniques such as wet-on-wet, colour blending, and layering.
  • To create an individual watercolour artwork inspired by O’Keeffe’s style, focusing on shapes and detail.

Success Criteria

  • Children can describe shapes and details observed in O’Keeffe’s paintings.
  • Children demonstrate basic watercolour techniques confidently.
  • Children produce a colourful, inspired painting showing an understanding of shape and detail.

Materials

  • Printed examples of Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral and landscape paintings (large images with clear details).
  • Watercolour sets and brushes (various sizes).
  • Watercolour paper (A4 or slightly larger).
  • Water pots, palettes or plates.
  • Paper towels or rags.
  • Pencils for sketching.
  • Aprons or protective clothing.

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction & Exploration (10 minutes)

  • Gather students around a visual presentation area. Show 3-4 carefully selected images of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings focusing on her florals and landscapes.
  • Guide a short, interactive discussion:
    • "What shapes do you see in these paintings?"
    • “How do the colours blend or stand out?”
    • "Do you notice any details that look close up or far away?"
    • Point out specific features: enlarged flowers, soft blending, vibrant colours, and simplified yet detailed shapes.

IE Curriculum Link: This supports Visual Arts - Responding to Art (Level 1) by enhancing observational skills and visual literacy.

2. Demonstration of Watercolour Techniques (10 minutes)

  • Show the children three simple techniques:

    1. Wet-on-wet: wet brush on wet paper – blending colours softly.
    2. Layering: allowing one layer to dry and painting another on top to create depth.
    3. Detailing: using a smaller brush to add shapes and outlines after base washes dry.
  • Encourage children to practice each technique briefly on scrap paper to build confidence.

IE Curriculum Link: Directly targets Creating with Materials (Level 1) by enabling experimentation with watercolour tools and materials.

3. Main Activity: Watercolour Painting (20 minutes)

  • Children use pencils to lightly sketch a flower or simple landscape inspired by O’Keeffe’s style on their paper focusing on exaggerated shapes.
  • Encourage children to use the watercolour techniques demonstrated to complete their artwork.
  • Teachers circulate to support students individually, asking guiding questions such as:
    • "What colours will you blend here?"
    • "Can you add more detail like in O’Keeffe’s flower?"
    • "How can layering add depth to your painting?"

IE Curriculum Link: Supports Expressing and Creating (Level 1) by encouraging personal expression through art.

4. Reflection & Sharing (5 minutes)

  • Organise a quick art gallery in the classroom where children display their paintings.
  • Facilitate a sharing moment: each child says one thing they liked about their painting or what they learned about watercolour or shapes.
  • Teacher reinforces vocabulary: shape, detail, blend, layer, floral, landscape.

IE Curriculum Link: Enhances Responding to Art (Level 1) through verbal articulation and peer appreciation.

Assessment

Formative assessment throughout:

  • Teacher observations during discussion and technique practice.
  • Informal questioning assessing understanding of shapes and colours.
  • Final artwork assessed against success criteria, focusing on use of watercolour techniques and inspired creativity.

Differentiation

  • Support children who find fine motor control challenging by providing thicker brushes and guided step-by-step assistance.
  • Challenge more confident pupils to experiment with mixing secondary colours.
  • Use peer partners for collaborative support and encouragement.

Extension Idea (if time permits)

Create a simple “Nature Texture” rubbings and use those patterns combined with watercolour washes, encouraging tactile exploration linked to the theme of nature in O’Keeffe’s art.

Teacher’s Notes

  • Prepare all materials in advance to maximise practical time.
  • Choose O’Keeffe paintings that are visually accessible without being too complex (large floral close-ups rather than abstract).
  • Emphasise the process of experimentation over perfection in painting.
  • Encourage a calm, focused atmosphere—watercolour encourages gentle techniques and mindfulness.

This lesson plan not only meets the IE Curriculum standards for first class art but also fosters creativity, observational skills, and technical skills with watercolours giving pupils a memorable introduction to an iconic artist's style.
