Overview

In this 35-minute lesson, students aged 8-10 (3rd-4th class) will engage in an interactive exploration of key weather vocabulary. The lesson aligns with the IE Curriculum framework, building foundational language competence in describing weather phenomena, supporting language development and scientific literacy through vocabulary acquisition, oral communication, and cooperative learning.

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (5 minutes)

• Activity: Weather Chat Circle
  • Teacher initiates a short chat asking: "How is the weather today? What do you notice outside?"
  • Encourage students to respond using simple words or phrases.
  • Teacher writes down words students mention on the board (highlight weather words).
• Purpose: Activate prior knowledge, generate interest, and introduce topic vocabulary informally.

2. Presenting New Vocabulary (7 minutes)

• Activity: Flashcard Presentation
  • Show weather flashcards one by one with visuals and say the word clearly.
  • Students repeat chorally and then individually.
  • Teacher explains each term with a short, simple definition and example sentence. E.g., "Sunny means the sun is shining brightly. Today is sunny, so we can play outside!"
• Differentiation: Use mime or gestures for each word (e.g., pretending to wipe sweat for sunny, blowing motion for windy).

  • Distribute bingo cards featuring weather words and pictures.

5. Independent Reflection & Drawing (5 minutes)

  • Students draw their favourite kind of weather in their notebooks and label it with the correct word from the lesson.
  • Optionally, write one sentence about the weather (e.g., "I like sunny weather because I can play outside.")

6. Wrap-Up & Homework Task (less than 1 minute)

• Say: “Next time, we will explore how these weather types affect us and the world around us!”
• Assign optional homework: Observe today’s weather at home and write or draw what you see, using 2-3 vocabulary words.
