Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Warm-Up Activity: "What’s the Word?"

   • Instructions:
     • Place students in a circle.
     • The teacher starts a simple sentence like "I like apples..." and tosses a bean bag to a student.
     • That student completes the sentence with "and" or "but" and adds their own clause (e.g., "and bananas" or "but not oranges").
     • Continue until each student has had a turn.

2. Discussion: Importance of Joining Sentences

   • Discuss why joining sentences is essential in communication and teamwork.

Main Activity (55 minutes)

1. Sentence Relay Race (25 minutes)

• Objective: Use physical activity to reinforce sentence joining concepts.
• Instructions:
  • Set up two relay lines using cones. Divide the class into two groups.
  • At the start line, give each team a set of sentence fragment flashcards.
  • On "Go," the first student in line selects two cards, runs to a midpoint, and joins the sentences using "and" or "but" on the whiteboard at the midpoint.
  • Once they have completed the sentence correctly, they run back and tag the next teammate.
  • The race continues until all students have had a turn. The team with the most correct sentences wins.

2. Pairs Challenge: Hula Hoop Sentences (15 minutes)

• Objective: Encourage collaboration and creativity in joining sentences.
• Instructions:
  • Students pair up and are given two hula hoops and a set of sentence fragments.
  • They place the hula hoops on the ground about a meter apart.
  • In one hula hoop, students place the first part of the sentence; in the other, they place the second part.
  • Using "and" or "but," students join the sentences and perform a physical action related to their new sentence (e.g., jump in the air, spin around, touch toes).
  • Allow each pair to share their favourite sentence with the class.

3. Team Building Game: "Conjunction Capture" (15 minutes)

• Objective: To work cooperatively to create and connect sentences.
• Instructions:
  • Divide the class into four small teams.
  • Spread hula hoops, each with a sentence fragment, across a designated area.
  • The objective is for students to collect the fragments and use "and" or "but" to form complete sentences as a team.
  • Teams must navigate certain zones by performing tasks related to Physical Education, such as skipping or balancing.
  • Once completed, teams present their sentences to the class.

Conclusion (15 minutes)

1. Cool-Down and Stretch (5 minutes)

   • Lead students through a series of stretches, incorporating reflective time to think about sentences formed during activities.

2. Class Reflection and Feedback (10 minutes)

   • Gather the students and discuss as a class.
   • Ask students to share their favourite sentence they successfully joined.
   • Get feedback on the activities and their thoughts on using sentences in communication.
