Teaching Instructions

I want my plan to focus on role model and target setting. Pupils will have already made a poster of their role model and the values of why they admire that person. Pupils should then do an activity on the values they want to achieve and how they can do this

Context and Overview

This 45-minute lesson for Year 2 pupils focuses on exploring personal values through the lens of role models. Building on their prior creation of role model posters, children will engage in reflection and goal-setting activities to understand the importance of values in personal development. The lesson aligns with the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Health and Wellbeing framework, particularly within the Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing experiences.

Curriculum for Excellence Links

  • Health and Wellbeing

    • I am aware of and able to express my feelings and am developing the ability to talk about them. (SCN 0-03a)
    • I understand the importance of developing confidence and self-esteem for different situations. (SCN 1-04a)
    • I can set myself realistic goals and with encouragement persevere towards achieving them. (HWB 1-26a)
  • Responsibility of Becoming Confident Individuals

    • I can recognise and celebrate the ways I and others I know contribute towards a community. (HWB 1-08a)

WALT (We Are Learning To)

  • Reflect on the values admired in our role models.
  • Identify personal values we want to develop.
  • Set simple, achievable targets based on those values.

Success Criteria

  • I can explain at least two values I admire in my role model.
  • I can name one or two values I want to develop.
  • I can write or draw simple targets to help me develop these values.
  • I can share my target with a friend or the class.

Resources

  • Pupils’ prior role model posters.
  • "My Values and Goals" worksheet (dyslexia-friendly font, with images).
  • Large paper for group sharing (optional).
  • Value cards with simple words and pictures (e.g., kindness, honesty, courage).
  • Markers, pencils, and crayons.

Lesson Breakdown (45 Minutes)

1. Introduction & Recap (5 minutes)

  • Begin by revisiting the role model posters created previously.
  • Ask children to share one value they admire in their role model with a partner.
  • Group discussion: Why are these values important? How do role models help us?

2. Group Activity: Values Sorting (10 minutes)

  • Children work in small groups (4-5 pupils) with value cards.
  • Each group sorts the cards into "I admire this value" and "I want to develop this value."
  • Teacher models sorting with one or two examples first.
  • Group feedback: One spokesperson shares their group’s choices.

Differentiation:

  • Provide pictorial cards for pupils who benefit from visual support.
  • Offer sentence starters for verbal sharing for students with speech language needs.

3. Individual Reflection & Target Setting (15 minutes)

  • Distribute "My Values and Goals" worksheet designed with large text and colourful images to support dyslexic readers.
  • Children draw or write two values they want to develop.
  • Next to each value, children write or draw a small target/action they can take to develop it (e.g., "Be kind by helping a friend," "Practice being honest by telling the truth").
  • Teacher circulates, providing support and prompting where necessary.

Differentiation:

  • Provide word banks or stickers for pupils who struggle to write.
  • Offer sentence strips for those who find structured writing helpful.

Extension activity:

  • Advanced learners can write a short sentence story to explain how they might demonstrate their chosen values at school or home.

4. Sharing and Affirmation (10 minutes)

  • Pupils pair up to share their goals with a ‘buddy’.
  • Encourage positive feedback using prompts like “That’s a great goal because…”.
  • Invite 3-4 volunteers to share their values and targets with the whole class.
  • Highlight effort and commitment, reinforcing the idea that goals can be developed over time.

5. Conclusion and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Recap the importance of values and goals.
  • Ask children to think quietly: “How can I remind myself of my values every day?”
  • Introduce a simple class reminder system (e.g., a values poster or a ‘goal jar’ where children can drop notes about their progress).

Assessment

  • Formative observation during group discussion and sharing to assess understanding and engagement.
  • Review of individual worksheets to check identification of values and relevance of targets.
  • Use verbal questioning to ensure pupils can articulate their chosen values.

Differentiation Strategies Summary

  • Visual aids and pictorial cards to support understanding.
  • Dyslexia-friendly worksheets (font size, spacing, use of images).
  • Alternative recording methods: drawing instead of writing.
  • Sentence starters and word banks.
  • Peer support in sharing activities.

Extension Suggestions for Advanced Learners

  • Write a short paragraph about how their role model demonstrates their chosen values in real life.
  • Create a ‘values diary’ for a week to track how they put their targets into action.
  • Research a new role model who embodies a different value and present findings to the class.

This lesson plan encourages pupils to connect personally with values through reflection, peer discussion, and creative goal-setting, supporting CfE principles of personal and interpersonal development in Health and Wellbeing. The approach also builds confidence and self-awareness in a supportive classroom environment.
