Teaching Instructions

I want a plan to focus on role models and how they can achieve what they admire about that person. They will start by completing their poster of their rold model with the values they like about them.

WALT

We Are Learning To:

  • Understand what qualities make a good role model.
  • Identify values we admire in a role model.
  • Express these values creatively through a poster.

Curriculum for Excellence Alignment

Level: Early Second Level (Scottish Curriculum)
Experiences and Outcomes:

  • HWB 2-07a: I am becoming aware of how I value and respect myself and others (Emotional Wellbeing and Relationships).
  • HWB 2-09a: I understand that respecting others and valuing myself influences how I feel about myself (Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing).
  • EXA 2-02a: I can create images and objects using my imagination and experience to share my thoughts, ideas and feelings. (Expressive Arts).
  • LIT 2-02a: I can spot and suggest possible meaning for words that I don’t know in texts I read or listen to. (Literacy).

Success Criteria

  • I can name a role model and explain why I admire them.
  • I can list at least three values or qualities I like about my role model.
  • I can create a clear, colourful poster showing my role model and their values.
  • I can share my poster and talk about what I learned from my role model.

Lesson Outline (45 minutes)

1. Introduction and Engagement (10 minutes)

  • Begin with a quick whole-class discussion:
    • “What is a role model?”
    • “Can you think of someone you admire? Why?”
  • Show 2-3 diverse example images of famous role models (e.g., sportspeople, scientists, community helpers).
  • Introduce task: Completing their role model poster by adding values they admire.

Differentiation:

  • Provide a sentence starter sheet for learners who struggle to verbalise ideas.
  • Use dyslexia-friendly fonts and coloured backgrounds on display materials for clarity.

2. Guided Activity – Poster Completion (20 minutes)

  • Learners continue their posters started previously or begin new ones, focusing on:
    • A clear image or drawing of their role model.
    • Writing or labelling values they admire around the image (e.g., kindness, bravery, determination).
  • Encourage use of creative materials (coloured pencils, stickers, magazines for collage).
  • Circulate to prompt learners with questions:
    • “Which quality do you admire most about your role model?”
    • “Why do you think this is important?”

Differentiation:

  • Provide pre-printed value word banks for those who need vocabulary support.
  • Pair learners who need support with peer buddies for discussion.
  • Offer tablets with text-to-speech apps to help with writing where appropriate.

Extension Activity:

  • Advanced learners can write a brief ‘quote’ or message from their role model on the poster, explaining how to live by those values.

3. Sharing and Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Invite 4-5 volunteers to share their posters with the class.
  • Encourage learners to listen actively and ask one kind question about the values shared.
  • Teacher highlights common values across posters and links back to the importance of respecting and learning from role models.

Dyslexia-friendly option:

  • Option to present by pointing to images/words rather than reading aloud to support confidence.

4. Plenary and Next Steps (5 minutes)

  • Recap WALT and success criteria by using a visual checklist on the board.
  • Quick verbal quiz: “Name one value you admired today.”
  • Set a small homework/challenge: “Try to show one value from your poster this week and tell us how it went.”

Resources Required

  • Role model posters (A3 or A4 paper)
  • Coloured pencils, markers, stickers
  • Word bank sheets with positive values
  • Images of diverse role models (printed or displayed)
  • Sentence starters sheet
  • Tablets with text-to-speech (optional)

Assessment

Formative assessment through:

  • Observing learners naming values and describing their posters.
  • Listening to explanations during the share session.
  • Checking posters for clear identification of role models and connected values.

Additional Notes

  • This lesson champions Social, Emotional and Behavioural Development, helping pupils articulate positive qualities and promoting self-awareness and respect (key aspects of Health and Wellbeing).
  • Promotes cross-curricular learning by linking Expressive Arts, Literacy, and HWB through a meaningful, familiar topic.
  • Encourages diverse thinking and understanding of role models beyond traditional celebrities to include local and community heroes.

This fresh approach will engage all learners, celebrate their uniqueness, and inspire them to reflect on their own potential to be role models.
