Lesson Breakdown (45 Minutes)
1. Welcome & Introduction (5 minutes)
- Brief overview of the unit theme: "Summer Sports Adventure"
- Explain rules of tag rugby briefly: no contact/full tackle but removing tags
- Emphasise teamwork, respect, and fun as key parts of the lesson
2. Warm-Up Activities (10 minutes)
Name & Motion Circle (5 minutes)
- Students form a circle.
- Each student says their name with a movement (e.g., jump, spin).
- The group repeats the name and movement.
- Purpose: Coordination, listening, and social bonding.
Team Relay Tag (5 minutes)
- Divide the class into 4 teams of ~6 students.
- Set up relay lines with cones 10m apart.
- The first player in each team runs tagging one team member lightly on the shoulder and hands over the tag rugby belt to the next runner.
- Variation: Players pass a rugby ball (underarm throw) to next runner before tag.
- Purpose: Warm up muscles, introduce passing and teamwork under timed conditions.
3. Main Activity: Tag Rugby Basics (25 minutes)
a. Passing Drill: "Circle Pass" (10 minutes)
- Students stand in a large circle (or multiple smaller circles ideally 6-7 per circle).
- Soft rugby ball passed underarm to a classmate.
- Focus on stepping towards the receiver, passing with two hands, communication ("Here!").
- Variation: Add "dummy" moves (faking direction) to foster awareness and agility.
b. Cooperative Tag Game (15 minutes)
- Split into two teams, each with tag belts.
- Play modified tag rugby with zones marked by cones.
- Objective: Pass the ball down the field to a team member in the scoring zone without losing tags.
- Enforce rules promoting cooperation: players must call for the ball, encourage team players, and avoid solo runs.
- Teacher role: Facilitate, encourage positive feedback, remind about space and teamwork.
- Reflect after the game on how passing helped the team and the importance of cooperation.
4. Cool-down and Mindfulness (5 minutes)
Stretching Series (3 minutes)
- Guided stretching targeting hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and arms.
- Encourage slow deep breaths with each stretch.
Mindful Breathing Exercise (2 minutes)
- Students lie or sit quietly.
- Teacher guides breathing awareness: "Breathe in deeply for 3... hold... breathe out slowly for 4."
- Invite students to feel their heartbeat and muscles relaxing.
- Brief reflection: “How does your body feel now after all the movement?”
Assessment and Feedback
- Formative:
Observation of passing technique and cooperation during drills
- Provide hands-on corrections gently
- Positive reinforcement for teamwork and communication
- Peer Feedback:
Encourage students at the end of main activity to share one thing they did well in teamwork
Differentiation
- For less confident movers:
Provide extra space and slower passing sequences
Use larger, lighter balls for ease of catching
- For more able students:
Introduce timed passing challenges
Encourage leadership roles within teams
Health and Safety Considerations
- Ensure enough space between teams to avoid collisions
- Check tags and belts for good condition to prevent tripping
- Hydration breaks if needed—advise students to bring water bottles
- Remind students about warm-up importance to avoid injury
Reflection for Teachers
Consider keeping a journal on students’ engagement and skill development to inform future lessons. Notice how students respond to mindfulness activities—this can enhance overall mental well-being alongside physical health.
This lesson plan blends physical skill acquisition with social and emotional learning, fostering a holistic approach to PE in line with UK education best practices.
