Teaching Instructions

I want the plans to focus on developing knowledge of the production areas in Drama, the questions the pupils will be asked to answer in the National 5 Drama exam related to the production areas (costume, lighting, sound, set, props, hair & make-up).

The students are exploring extracts from Macbeth so I would also like to incorporate the themes and issues in this play as a stimulus for them to develop their ideas for a short production of an extract from the play.

Unveiling Production Secrets

Lesson Overview

Curriculum Area: Drama, National 5 (SQA)

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • A4 paper and coloured pens
  • Dramatic terminology handouts
  • Costume, set, and lighting design sketch templates
  • Access to a basic theatre lighting and sound set-up (if available)

Lesson Plan

Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Welcome and Objectives: Start with a brief introduction to the importance of production areas in drama (5 minutes).
  • Connect to Macbeth: Relate the lesson to the themes and cultural significance of Macbeth. Focus on how these themes can be enhanced through production elements (5 minutes).

Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)

  • Thematic Brainstorm: In groups of four, students brainstorm key themes from Macbeth (such as ambition, guilt, and the supernatural) on A4 paper.

Exploration of Production Areas (30 minutes)

Activity – Production Area Carousel

Divide the class into six groups. Each group will spend five minutes at various production stations:

  1. Costume: Students sketch costumes for three witches, considering the time period and thematic implications.
  2. Lighting: Explore different lighting effects using basic theatre equipment to convey mood and atmosphere.
  3. Sound: Discuss and decide on sound cues that might enhance the eerie atmosphere of a scene.
  4. Set: Quick design mock-up of a minimalist set for a chosen scene, considering space and movement.
  5. Props: Identify which props would be crucial in a scene to symbolise key themes.
  6. Hair & Make-Up: Design face charts for Lady Macbeth, considering her transformation throughout the play.

Rotate every 5 minutes, with a minute to annotate insights after each rotation.

Analysing Exam Questions (20 minutes)

  • Discussion: Facilitate a classroom discussion using past National 5 Drama exam questions related to production areas. Encourage students to identify common themes and question structures (10 minutes).

  • Group Activity: Each group answers a sample question on a production area. Discuss answers with the class, focusing on exam technique and content depth (10 minutes).

Developing a Short Production (20 minutes)

Activity – Director's Cut

In their original groups, students choose an extract from Macbeth and:

  • Plan how to use production elements to enhance the chosen scene (10 minutes).
  • Each group pitches their concept to the class, explaining their production choices and the thematic focus they aim to highlight (10 minutes).

Conclusion and Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Reflect: Students individually write a brief reflection on how they could employ their knowledge of production areas in an exam setting.
  • Share: Gather insights from a few students as a closing discussion.

Homework Assignment

Write a short essay on how one specific production area could enhance an extract from Macbeth, including a schematic or sketch to support ideas.

Assessment

  • Informal Observation: Participation in group activities and carousel rotations.
  • Peer Assessment: Feedback on group pitches.
  • Written Reflection: Evaluate student reflections for understanding of production areas and application to thematic elements.

Differentiation Strategies

  • Support: Provide simplified handouts summarising key production terms.
  • Challenge: Advanced students can design detailed plans incorporating multiple production elements in their homework assignments.

Emphasising production elements not only develops practical skills but also enhances analytical abilities crucial for success in National 5 Drama. Engaging with Macbeth helps bridge classical literature and modern theatrical practice, enriching the students' understanding and appreciation of drama.
