Auslan Fluency and Signing Space
Developing clear communication skills Using proper signing space Building fluency in familiar contexts
What is Signing Space?
The area in front of your body where signs are made Extends from your waist to above your head From shoulder to shoulder width Different signs use different parts of this space
Key Elements of Fluent Signing
{"left":"Correct handshape for each sign\nProper movement and direction\nRight location in signing space","right":"Appropriate facial expressions\nSteady pace and rhythm\nClear transitions between signs"}
Practice Activity: Mirror Signing
Partner up with a classmate One person signs, the other mirrors Focus on handshape and space usage Switch roles every 2 minutes Practice these signs: SCHOOL, HAPPY, FRIEND, HELP
Non-Manual Features (NMFs)
Facial expressions that add meaning Eye gaze direction Head movements and tilts Body posture and positioning These work WITH hand signs, not separately
Quick Check: Can You Identify?
Watch me sign and tell me: What handshape am I using? Where in signing space is this sign made? What facial expression goes with this sign?
Fluency Challenge: Sign Relay
Form two teams in lines First person gets a word card Sign it clearly to the next person No speaking or mouthing words! Team that finishes correctly first wins
Remember
Practice makes fluent! Every sign has its special place in signing space Your face and hands work together to communicate clearly
