📍 Part 1: Read the Map — Grid References & Directions

WALT: We are learning to read a map, use grid references and follow directions.

Success criteria: I can find a place using its column letter and row number. I can describe directions using north, south, east and west. I can follow a route on a map.

Differentiation: Support — use the compass rose and trace the highlighted route with a finger. Challenge — describe a route using two or more direction words.

Use the map below. Columns are labelled A to E from left to right. Rows are numbered 1 to 5 from bottom to top. The wide lines are roads. The blue dashed line shows a suggested route from the Bench to the Shop.

Park grid map A five by five grid labelled columns A to E and rows 1 to 5. It shows a Bench at A1, a Tree at B3, a Fountain at C4, a Shop at D5 and a Café at E2. WALT: We are learning to write clear directions and plan simple routes on a grid map.

Success criteria: I can write a correct grid reference. I can list directions in the correct order. I can use the map to plan a safe route.

6. Write the grid reference for the Café.
7. Write step-by-step directions from the Café in E2 to the Fountain in C4. Use numbers and direction words.
8. Each square on the map is 200 metres. Find the distance from the Bench in A1 to the Shop in D5 if you travel east first and then north. Show your working and give your answer in kilometres.
9. Follow the blue dashed route from the Bench to the Shop. Write the grid references of the places you visit in order.
