Objectives

Materials

• Word cards with missing blends
• Picture cards
• A mini word search puzzle (one per student)
• Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Plan

1. Introduction (1 minute)

• Engage Students: Begin with a cheerful greeting and gather students in a circle. Tell them today they are going to become word detectives!
• Objective Overview: Briefly explain that they will be learning about "blends," which are two letters that work together to help make words.

2. Activity 1: Fill in the Blends (2 minutes)

• Instructions: Show the word cards one by one. Each card should have a picture (e.g., a frog) and a word with missing blends (e.g., _rog).

• Student Participation:

  • Ask, “What’s missing at the start of this word?”
  • Encourage students to listen to the initial sound and shout out the blend.
  • Examples to use: fl_ower, gl_asses, br_ead, cl_ock.

3. Activity 2: Cloze Activity (1 minute)

• Instructions: Provide students with a simple sentence leaving out the blend.

  • “The _ag is so bright!” (Answer: fl – flag)
  • “I can see the _eam!” (Answer: st – steam)

• Student Participation:

  • After guessing the blend, call out students to fill in the blanks on a mini whiteboard placed on their laps.

4. Activity 3: Word Search (1 minute)

• Instructions: Hand out mini word search worksheets with blend words hidden among letters.

• Student Participation:

  • Use this as a quick closing activity. Let students search for one word before ending the lesson for the day.

Closing (30 seconds)

• Wrap-Up: Praise the students for their good detective work. Highlight the importance of recognizing blends in reading and writing words.
• Feedback: Ask students (thumbs up/thumbs down) if they enjoyed being word detectives.

Differentiation Strategies

• For Advanced Students: Offer additional challenge by using blends in more complex words not covered in the main lesson.
• For Students Needing Support: Focus more on auditory recognition, repeating blend sounds clearly before showing the word card.

By integrating phonics with a theme of play and exploration, the lesson becomes dynamical and tactile, addressing both the California Language Arts and Math standards through a multi-sensory approach.
