Building Healthy Habits

Curriculum Area

Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum (Grades 1-8): Healthy Living Strand, Grade 6 – C2. Understanding Health Concepts
Focus: Healthy Eating

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 4-minute mini-lesson, students will:

  1. Understand the basics of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and their importance for energy, growth, and overall health.
  2. Identify one way Canada’s Food Guide can help in making balanced food choices.
  3. Recognize the importance of hydration in maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Materials/Preparation

  • Visual aid: A colourful poster or handout showing Canada’s Food Guide plate
  • 3 objects or images to represent macronutrients:
    • A small piece of bread (carbohydrate)
    • A boiled egg (protein)
    • A small bag of almonds (healthy fat)
  • A clear glass of water for demonstration

Lesson Breakdown

Introduction (1 minute)

  1. Hook: Hold the glass of water up and ask:
    • "If our bodies were cars, what would fuel them to keep moving?"
    • Wait for student responses (e.g., food, water).
  2. Share the big idea: "Food is the fuel that powers our body for energy, growth, and health. Today, we’re going to learn how to make smart food choices to keep our bodies and minds strong!”

Key Concepts (2 minutes)

1. The Basics of Nutrition (Macronutrients)

  • Show the three objects/images (bread, egg, almonds) and explain briefly:
    • Carbohydrates (bread): “These are your body’s energy providers – your brain and muscles love these.”
    • Proteins (egg): “These are the builders and repairers of your body. Think: muscles, skin, hair.”
    • Fats (almonds): “These are like a backup energy source and help your brain work well.”
  • Hold up the water: "And don’t forget this – water keeps everything working properly inside!"

2. Canada’s Food Guide Plate

  • Display the handout or poster:
    • "Can anyone guess why this plate is divided this way?" (Pause for responses.)
    • Explain: "Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables, a quarter whole grains, and a quarter proteins. This helps keep our energy and health balanced."
  • Tip: “Choose water over sugary drinks like soda to stay hydrated and avoid extra sugar.”

3. The Importance of Hydration

  • Hold up the glass of water again:
    • "Your body is mostly made of water, so it’s like the oil to keep your engine running. Drink lots of water every day!”

Wrap-Up and Quick Quiz (1 minute)

  1. Recap key points by asking students: (Call on individuals for answers.)
    • "What’s one food that gives you energy quickly?" (Answer: Carbohydrates)
    • "What nutrient helps your body get strong and repair itself?" (Answer: Proteins)
    • "What simple drink should we have lots of every day?" (Answer: Water)
  2. End with an empowering message: "Making small, healthy choices every day adds up. Fuel your body with healthy food and water, and you’ll feel unstoppable!"

Assessment

  • Students will verbally respond to the Quick Quiz questions to demonstrate understanding.
  • Teacher can note which students participated and grasped the main ideas.

Extension (Optional for Future Lessons)

  • Explore how to read food labels and spot hidden sugars, fats, and artificial ingredients.
  • Hands-on activity: Building a balanced plate with cutouts from food images or magazines.

Notes for the Teacher:

  • This lesson is structured to fit into a short session. Engage students actively with visuals and props to make the key concepts stick.
  • Build on this session by exploring more uses of Canada’s Food Guide in grocery selection or meal planning. Keep encouraging practical applications for their own food choices.
