Lesson Overview:

In this 45-minute lesson, students will explore different cultural traditions in their community. The lesson incorporates a storybook or photo stimulus to activate background knowledge, a hands-on cultural artifact exploration, and a short writing activity to consolidate learning.

Learning Outcome: Students explore ways to acknowledge and demonstrate an understanding of cultures.
Understanding: People can show respect for different cultures.
Knowledge: People in a group or community can have a variety of characteristics, including:

Lesson Structure (45 Minutes)

1. Hook: Engaging Curiosity (10 Minutes)

Resource Options:

• Book: The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi – A relatable story about cultural identity.
• Photo/Projection: Images of traditional clothing, food, and celebrations from various cultures represented in the classroom.

Engagement Strategy:

• Ask: "What do you notice in these pictures? Have you seen or experienced something similar?"
• Discuss students' own experiences with cultural clothing, foods, or celebrations.
• Encourage open responses about what "culture" means to them.

2. Hands-On Learning: Cultural Artifact Exploration (20 Minutes)

Activity: Cultural Treasure Boxes

• Preparation: Create small boxes or bags containing objects representing different cultures (e.g., a small drum, chopsticks, a colourful scarf, a wooden carving, a tiny flag).
• Procedure:
  1. Place students into small groups (2-3 students per group).
  2. Each group selects one box/bag and explores its items.
  3. They discuss their observations: "What do you think this is used for? Where might it come from?"
  4. Each group shares one item and their thoughts with the class.
  5. Teacher connects students' observations to concepts of culture, heritage, and traditions.

3. Writing Reflection: Culture Connection (15 Minutes)

Writing Prompt:

• "Draw and write about a special tradition in your family. It could be a food, a celebration, or something special you do together."
• Provide sentence starters:
  • "In my family, we celebrate..."
  • "A special food we eat is..."
  • "We show respect in my culture by..."
• Students share their writing with a partner or the class.
