Overview

This lesson plan is designed for 1st Grade ESL students in China to learn about colours, tied to the California English Language Development Standards. The focus will be on listening, speaking, and comprehension skills, using simple questions and answers to engage students. The lesson will cater to the English Language Development (ELD) domain: Communication, emphasizing Stage I of ELD for Grade 1.

Lesson Outline

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

1. Greeting & Introduction:

   • Begin with a friendly greeting: "Good morning, class!"
   • Perform a quick roll call and establish an energetic mood for the day.
   • Introduce today’s topic: “Today, we will learn about colours!”

2. Simple Song:

   • Play a simple colours song or chant that includes basic colours (e.g., “Red and Yellow and Pink and Green...”) to engage students with movement and melody.

Introduction to Colours (10 minutes)

1. Colour Flashcards:

   • Show each flashcard and say the colour: “This is red.” Encourage choral repetition.
   • Go around the room, asking students individually to repeat: “What colour is this?”

2. Real-Life Objects:

   • Present an object, e.g., an apple, and ask, "What colour is this apple?"
   • Encourage students to participate by passing around objects and asking each other.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Interactive Whiteboard Activity:

   • Display a large poster or use an interactive whiteboard with various coloured items.
   • Point to an object and ask, "What colour is this?"
   • Encourage hands to be raised and call on individual students to answer.

2. Question and Answer Practice:

   • Model a mini-dialogue: “What colour do you like?” “I like blue.”
   • Pair students and let them practice asking and answering these questions with each other.

Hands-On Activity (10 minutes)

1. Colouring Worksheet:

   • Hand out worksheets with black and white images of basic shapes or objects.
   • Instruct the students: “Colour the sun yellow. Colour the frog green.”
   • Walk around the class to provide support and encouragement.

2. Show and Tell:

   • Allow a few students to stand up and show their coloured worksheet.
   • Ask them: “What colour is your sun?” Have them answer in complete sentences.

Cool-Down (5 minutes)

1. Colour Round-Up:

   • Gather students in a circle. Say a colour and ask them to look around and point if they see something that colour.

2. Reflection Question:

   • Ask, “What colour do you like, and why?” Call on volunteers to answer.

Assessment

• Observe students during interactive activities and dialogues for correct colour identification and response.
• Evaluate worksheets to ensure proper application of colours.

Extension Activity

For advanced students, introduce more complex colour sentences, such as, “The sky is sometimes blue and sometimes grey. What colour is the sky today?” Encourage descriptive exploration!
