• Printed copies of two short narrative excerpts (about 1 paragraph each)
• Graphic organisers: Narrative Elements Chart
• Brainstorming worksheets

Lesson Breakdown

1. Warm-up: Story Elements Recall (10 minutes)

• Begin with a quick, interactive discussion. Ask students: "What makes a story interesting?"
• Write students’ ideas on the board under the headings: Character, Setting, Plot, Conflict, Resolution.
• Confirm and briefly explain these elements according to the curriculum:
  • Character: Who is in the story?
  • Setting: Where and when does it take place?
  • Plot: What happens?
  • Conflict: What problem drives the story?
  • Resolution: How is the problem solved?

2. Introduction to Narrative Elements via Examples (15 minutes)

• Distribute two short narrative excerpts.
• Students read individually or in pairs, then complete a Narrative Elements Chart, identifying the elements in each text.
• Facilitate a class discussion to compare responses, highlighting how these elements function and why they make the narratives engaging.
• Point out effective use of conflict and resolution that create tension and release.

3. Group Activity: Analysing Engagement (10 minutes)

• Divide class into 5 groups of 5 students.
• Each group discusses and lists on sticky notes “What makes this story engaging?” focusing on the narrative elements.
• Groups place their sticky notes on the board under the respective element headings.
• Quickly review the contributions, emphasizing how writers craft compelling narratives by balancing characters, setting, and conflict.

4. Brainstorming Personal Narratives (20 minutes)

• Explain that students will begin crafting their own narrative stories based on personal experience or imagination.
• Distribute brainstorming worksheets with guiding questions:
  • Who is your main character?
  • Where and when does your story take place?
  • What is the main event or plot?
  • What conflict will your character face?
  • How might this conflict be resolved?
• Students work independently to fill out the graphic organiser.
• Teacher circulates to support and encourage creativity, prompting students to think beyond clichés and explore unique or personal ideas.

5. Closure and Reflection (5 minutes)

• Invite a few volunteers to share one element of their story idea with the class.
• Wrap up by reinforcing the importance of narrative elements in making stories engaging and meaningful.
• Set the stage for Lesson 2: Developing Characters and Setting.
