paper bag book report
5th Grade (Aligned with California Common Core Standards in English Language Arts)
Students will create and present a "Paper Bag Book Report" to demonstrate comprehension of a book they have recently read. This activity will foster critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills as per California Common Core ELA Standards:
Explain that the outside of the bag gets decorated, and the inside contains items related to the story.
Break the activity into four parts:
Front of the Bag: The book’s title, author, and a hand-drawn image of an important scene or symbol from the book.
Back of the Bag: A short summary of the book (2-3 sentences), the main theme, and the student's favourite moment.
Sides of the Bag: Vertical spaces can include adjectives describing the setting, main characters, and one sentence about why the student would recommend the book.
Inside the Bag: 3-5 tangible objects representing the story or characters. (For example, if the book is "Charlotte’s Web," students could include string for a web, a small pig figurine, or a tiny farm tool.)
This lesson blends creativity, reflection, and engagement, while adhering to CA Common Core Standards, ensuring students build comprehension and presentation skills that are both educative and fun!
