Lesson Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Begin with a brief recapitulation of the events in Chapters 6 and 7.
• Highlight key events and characters introduced.
• Explain objectives: today we will delve into the characters' motivations and themes presented in these chapters.

Activity: Deep Dive Discussion (10 minutes)

• Divide students into small groups and assign each a specific part of Chapters 6 and 7.
• Have groups discuss the following questions:
  • What are the main events in these chapters?
  • How do the characters' actions and decisions align with the book’s themes?
  • Encourage students to cite specific passages to back their discussions.

Worksheet Activity (10 minutes)

• Distribute the worksheet that includes five detailed questions.

Worksheet Questions:

1. Analyze Stanley's internal conflict in Chapter 6.
   What specific experiences led to his feelings of isolation? Provide examples from the text.

2. Character Evolution:
   How does Zero's introduction and behaviour impact Stanley’s perspective on Camp Green Lake?

3. Theme Exploration:
   In Chapter 7, there's a flashback to Elya Yelnats’ story. How does this history relate to the themes of fate and friendship in the novel?

4. Textual Evidence:
   Find and explain two pieces of textual evidence that showcase the theme of justice versus injustice. How do these elements affect the plot and character interactions?

5. Predict Changes:
   Based on the actions and feelings demonstrated in these chapters, predict how Stanley might change or adapt throughout his stay at Camp Green Lake. What evidence from the text supports your prediction?

Conclusion and Reflection (5 minutes)

• Bring the class back together to discuss insights from questions.
• Have a few students share their responses and evidence.
• Conclude the lesson by emphasizing the importance of character development and themes in enhancing their understanding of the novel.

Assessment

• Students will submit their completed worksheets, which will be reviewed for understanding of characters, plot events, and themes within the assigned chapters.
