Eco Tourism Adventure

Objective

Students will learn about eco-tourism in Egypt, integrating language arts skills by exploring informational text and digital storytelling.

• Printouts of Egyptian eco-tourism sites (Valley of the Whales, the White Desert, Aswan, etc.)

Lesson Structure

Introduction (5 minutes)

• Begin with a brief discussion: "What is eco-tourism?" Encourage students to share ideas about environmentally responsible travel and the importance of protecting natural sites.
• Show a 2-minute introductory video about eco-tourism in Egypt, showcasing vibrant visuals of the destinations.

Exploration and Research (10 minutes)

• Break students into pairs and assign each pair one eco-tourism site in Egypt. Provide access to digital tablets or laptops.
• Direct each pair to explore a designated digital resource (PDF or curated website) about their assigned site. Instruct them to take notes on key features, historical significance, and conservation efforts.

Digital Storytelling Activity (15 minutes)

• Transition into digital storytelling. Each pair will use the storytelling software to create a digital postcard. The postcard should illustrate a story as if they are visiting the assigned site.
• Components of the digital postcard:
  1. An image or drawing of the site (utilize digital drawing tools if available)
  2. A 5-sentence narrative describing what they "see," "hear," and "feel."
  3. One interesting fact about eco-tourism efforts in that area.

Presentation and Sharing (7 minutes)

• Have pairs present their digital postcards to the class. Prompt students to ask questions and give feedback.
• Display each digital postcard on the screen for all students to view.

Reflection and Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

• Gather students back for a quick reflective discussion. Ask, "What did you learn about the importance of eco-tourism from our activity?"
• Prompt students to think about one eco-site they would like to visit and why.

Differentiation

• For Advanced Students: Encourage them to include a short video or audio clip in their digital postcards with a deeper dive into cultural aspects or personal impressions of their eco-site.
• For Struggling Students: Pair students strategically and provide additional visual supports, such as infographics or simple brochures about the sites.

Assessment

• Formative assessment through digital postcard creation and presentations. Evaluate based on creativity, information accuracy, and collaborative effort.
