Enchanted Encounter Fun

Overview

This 40-minute lesson is designed to captivate 4th-grade students through engaging literature and creative activities. Tailored to meet the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, the lesson combines reading comprehension, literature appreciation, and creative expression.

Learning Objectives

• Students will improve reading comprehension and fluency using The Enchanted Encounter.
• Students will enhance their artistic abilities through storybook colouring.
• Students will develop problem-solving skills with Halloween-themed mazes.

Materials Needed

• The Enchanted Encounter reading passage
• Storybook colouring sheets
• Halloween Mazes worksheets
• Colouring materials (crayons, coloured pencils, markers)
• Pencils and erasers
• Timer or clock

Lesson Procedure

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Setup: Welcome students and ensure everyone has their materials.
2. Hook: Spark excitement by asking, "What magical creature would you like to meet if you stumbled upon an enchanting forest?"
3. Objective Announcement: Share the day’s objectives, highlighting the fun activities ahead.

Part 1: Reading Activity (10 minutes)

1. Guided Reading: Have students read The Enchanted Encounter passage silently for understanding.
2. Discussion: Prompt students with questions to ensure comprehension:
   • What is the main setting of the story?
   • Describe your favourite character and why.
   • What would you do if you were in the protagonist’s shoes?

Part 2: Creative Colouring (10 minutes)

1. Instructions: Transition into the colouring activity. Remind students that their work should reflect the story’s themes and characters.
2. Colour and Collaborate: Encourage students to discuss colour choices and scenes depicted in their storybook colouring sheets.

Part 3: Halloween Mazes (10 minutes)

1. Introduce the Mazes: Explain that these Halloween Mazes will both challenge their brains and enhance their problem-solving skills.
2. Independent Work: Set a timer for 10 minutes. Allow students to work independently on the mazes. If they finish early, they can assist a peer.

Conclusion and Review (5 minutes)

1. Share and Reflect: Allow students to share their coloured sheets and discuss the most challenging parts of the maze.
2. Recap: Briefly review the lesson’s activities and how they relate to English language art skills, particularly in imagination and problem solving.
3. Closure: Collect materials and thank students for their hard work and creativity.

Assessment

• Informal Observation: Monitor student participation in discussions and observe reading fluency.
• Colouring Sheets and Mazes: Take note of creativity in colouring and completion of mazes to gauge comprehension and effort.

Differentiation

• For Advanced Readers: Encourage them to write an alternative ending to The Enchanted Encounter.
• For Struggling Students: Pair them with peers for shared reading and collaborative problem solving during the maze activity.
