Overview

This lesson plan is designed for Grade 2 students, focusing on growing and shrinking patterns. The lesson is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.4).

Objectives

• Students will identify and extend growing and shrinking patterns.

• Coloured blocks or cubes
• Pattern cards (pre-made with different growing and shrinking patterns)
• Large chart paper and markers
• Small whiteboards and dry-erase markers for each student

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Engage Students
   Start with a brief discussion on what patterns are. Use everyday examples, such as the days of the week or seasons of the year. Encourage students to share their knowledge of patterns.

2. Introduce Concepts
   Clearly define 'growing patterns' (patterns that increase, e.g., 2, 4, 6, 8) and 'shrinking patterns' (patterns that decrease, e.g., 10, 8, 6, 4). Use the visualiser/document camera to show examples with blocks.

Interactive Teaching (20 minutes)

1. Demonstration

   • Use coloured blocks to build a simple growing pattern (e.g., 1 block, then 2 blocks, then 3 blocks).
   • Develop a shrinking pattern (e.g., 5 blocks, then 4 blocks, then 3 blocks).
   • Encourage students to predict the next step in each pattern.

2. Hands-On Activity

   • Distribute blocks, pattern cards, and whiteboards.
   • Let students work in pairs to arrange blocks in both growing and shrinking patterns.
   • Ask each pair to replicate one pattern on their whiteboard and make predictions about the next number in the sequence.

Group Activity (15 minutes)

1. Pattern Creation

   • Split the class into small groups of 3 students.
   • Provide each group with chart paper and coloured markers.
   • Instruct the groups to create one growing and one shrinking pattern using drawings or symbolic representations (like circles or stars).
   • Once completed, each group presents their patterns to the class.

2. Class Discussion

   • Discuss patterns presented by each group.
   • Highlight various strategies students used to create and identify patterns.

Consolidation & Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Worksheet Activity

   • Hand out worksheets with a series of incomplete patterns.
   • Students fill in the blanks to complete the patterns. Include both types of patterns to ensure understanding.

2. Exit Ticket

   • On a small piece of paper, each student draws or writes a pattern and leaves it in the designated "Pattern Box" before leaving class. This serves as an assessment of their understanding.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• Recap key concepts of growing and shrinking patterns.
• Use an encouraging tone to tell students they’ll explore more complex patterns in future lessons.
• Praise the creativity and collaboration displayed by all students today.
