Learning Objectives
By the end of the 30-minute lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe direct and indirect (distance) forces.
- Predict and explain how everyday objects move when forces are applied.
- Demonstrate understanding of how objects can start, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction due to force.
- Engage in hands-on, inquiry-based group activity to apply these concepts.
Materials Needed
- Small toy cars (1 per group of 3-4 students)
- Marbles
- Magnets
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Stopwatch
- Ramp boards (books or boxes to create inclines)
- Balloons
- Chart paper and markers
- "Forces Prediction Cards" (prepared in advance, see Activity section)
- Whiteboard and dry erase markers
Lesson Breakdown
🔹 Introduction (5 minutes)
Activate Prior Knowledge + Hook
- Start with a quick question to spark curiosity:
“Can something move without being touched?”
- Allow 2-3 students to share thoughts aloud. Quickly record answers on the board.
- Brief demo: Hold two magnets near each other without touching. Demonstrate repelling force and ask:
“What just made that happen without touching?”
Explain that today, we’ll explore how forces can act directly (like pushing a toy car) or from a distance (like magnets or gravity), and how they change the motion of objects.
🔹 Direct Instruction (5 minutes)
Key Concepts to Highlight
Use images or simple diagrams on the board:
- Force is a push or pull.
- Direct force needs contact — e.g., pushing a door.
- Distance force doesn’t need contact — e.g., gravity, magnetism.
- Forces can:
- Start motion
- Stop motion
- Speed things up
- Slow them down
- Change their direction
Use clear, relatable language — e.g., “You apply force when you kick a soccer ball” or “Magnets can pull or push without touching.”
🔹 Group Activity: "Force Lab Circuits" (15 minutes)
Students rotate through 3 mini-stations. 5 minutes per station.
Break the 17 students into 4 groups (3 groups of 4, 1 group of 5). Assign each group a starting numbered station.
Station 1: Push or Pull?
- Materials: Toy cars, ramps, balloons (filled and prepped).
- Students release cars from different ramp heights and inflate/release balloons to push cars.
- Record observations: How did the speed or direction change with more force?
Station 2: Magnetic Mayhem
- Materials: Magnets, marbles.
- Move marbles using magnets without touching. Challenge students: How far away can a force still act?
- Record: What did the force do to the marble?
Station 3: Gravity Drop
- Materials: Balls of different weights.
- Drop them from the same height. Ask students to time (estimate counts out loud or use stopwatch).
- Predict and observe which hits first.
- Discuss: Is gravity a contact force?
Bonus Activity (if time): Prediction Cards
- Each group pulls a card with a real-life scenario (e.g., "A hockey puck slides across the ice and slows down").
- They must identify the type of force and describe the effect on motion.
🔹 Class Discussion + Wrap-up (5 minutes)
Discussion Prompts:
- "What’s the difference between a direct and a distance force?"
- "Which station surprised you the most today?"
- Invite students to share one way they experienced a force today — outside of class.
Wrap-up Concept Map:
Draw a central circle labelled "Forces" and ask students to help fill in surrounding concepts like Push, Pull, Start, Stop, Change direction, Gravity, etc. as a class reflection.

Formative:
- Observation of participation at each station.
- Student contributions during wrap-up.
- Station notebooks or worksheets with recorded observations.
Summative (Optional Extension for Next Class):
- Short exit slip asking:
- “Give an example of a distance force.”
- “Describe how a force can change an object's direction.”
