Fun with Fractions

Objective

Students will understand how to compare and order fractions with like and unlike denominators. They will be able to use visual aids and number lines to identify equivalent fractions and connect their understanding to real-life applications.

California State Standards

Grade 5 – Number and Operations—Fractions:
Standard 5.NF.1: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions.
Standard 5.NF.2: Solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators.

Materials Needed

• Fraction strips or fraction circles
• Whiteboard and markers
• Student notebooks and pencils
• iPads/Tablets with a fraction app (optional)
• Index cards
• Visual fraction cards

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-Up (2 minutes): Welcome students with a brief warm-up. Write a simple fraction problem on the board and ask students to solve it individually in their notebooks (e.g., 1/2 + 1/4).

2. Objective Overview (3 minutes): Introduce the day’s lesson on comparing and ordering fractions. Explain why understanding fractions is important in everyday life (e.g., cooking, dividing items equally).

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Review of Fractions (5 minutes):

   • Begin with a quick review of basic fraction concepts. Use fraction strips or circles to visualize halves, thirds, and quarters.
   • Explain how to create equivalent fractions and why we need to find a common denominator when comparing them.

2. Model Comparing Fractions (5 minutes):

   • Demonstrate how to compare fractions with like and unlike denominators using visual aids.
   • Show how to use a number line to plot fractions and see which is larger or smaller.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Small Group Activity (7 minutes):

   • Divide the class into small groups of 4-5 students. Hand out fraction strips or fraction circles and some index cards with fractions written on them.
   • Ask each group to order the fractions on their cards from smallest to largest using the strips/circles and number lines.

2. Class Discussion (3 minutes):

   • Regroup and discuss each group’s findings. Have them explain how they determined the order and what strategies they used.

Independent Practice (10 minutes)

1. Fraction Problems (7 minutes):

   • Provide students with a worksheet that includes fraction comparison problems. Ensure that some fractions have like denominators and some have unlike denominators.
   • Ask students to solve them independently and write their answers in their notebooks.

2. Technology Integration (Optional, 3 minutes):

   • If iPads/Tablets are available, allow students to use a fraction app that lets them practice comparing and ordering fractions digitally.

Closing & Assessment (5 minutes)

1. Exit Ticket (3 minutes):

   • Give each student an index card and ask them to write a fraction comparison problem and solve it. Collect these as they exit to check understanding.

2. Summary (2 minutes):

   • Recap the key points of the lesson. Ask a few students to share what they learned about comparing and ordering fractions.

Homework

1. Fraction Cooking Activity:
   • Ask students to find a simple recipe at home that includes fractions (e.g., 1/2 cup of sugar) and convert those fractions to different equivalent fractions.

Extension Activity

1. Fraction Art:
   • Have students create a piece of art using different fractions. They can use paper shapes to represent different fractions and create a collage.
