Lesson Outline

Introduction (2 minutes)

1. Greeting and Objective Introduction
   • Greet the students warmly and gather them in a circle.
   • Introduce the topic by explaining that they will have fun playing with sounds through rhymes and claps.
   • Briefly explain what rhyming words are, using simple examples like "cat" and "hat".

Activity 1: Rhyme Time (5 minutes)

1. Rhyme Recognition

   • Using flashcards, show pairs of images (e.g., cat/hat, dog/log).
   • Ask students to say the words aloud together.
   • Facilitate a discussion by asking: "Do these words sound the same at the end?"
   • Use the 'Rhyme Time' puppet to add excitement. The puppet can celebrate a correct answer with a funny dance or a cheer.

2. Producing Rhymes

   • Challenge students to come up with a word that rhymes with a word they use frequently (e.g., name of the student: Max – "What rhymes with Max?").
   • Give quick and fun feedback, e.g., "Great job! Max and Jax make a rhyme pair!"

Activity 2: Syllable Stomp (5 minutes)

1. Introduction to Syllables

   • Explain that words are made up of different "beats" and these are called syllables.
   • Demonstrate clapping out the syllables of a simple word like "apple" (ap-ple has two claps).

2. Syllable Clapping and Stomping

   • Invite students to stand up and clear a little space around them.
   • As you say a word from the flashcards, students must clap or stomp the number of syllables in the word.
   • Use words with varying syllable counts to keep it dynamic (e.g., "cat" – 1 clap, "tiger" – 2 claps).

Conclusion (3 minutes)

1. Review

   • Recap by revisiting one or two words discussed during the activities and ask for the rhyming word or syllables.
   • Engage students by letting them choose a favourite word to rhyme or clap out.

2. Feedback and Rewards

   • Provide positive feedback and offer a sticker to each student for participating.
   • Praise the class for their excellent listening and participation.

Assessment

• Observation: Monitor students’ ability to recognize rhymes and syllables during activities.
• Gather informal feedback by asking questions and observing hands-on participation.

Modifications

• For students who may struggle, consider providing more one-on-one support using the puppet or a teacher's aid.
• Use visual aids such as pictures or objects for ESL learners to make connections with the spoken words.
