Interests and Hobbies

Overview

This 60-minute lesson is the third in a 16-lesson unit titled Exploring Identity and Interests. Students will explore and use French vocabulary related to hobbies and interests, create personal lists of their own hobbies, and practise sharing these with a partner. The lesson addresses oral and written communication skills while fostering cultural awareness and self-expression, aligned with the British Columbia French curriculum for grade 8.

Lesson Sequence

• Activity: Quick review of previous lesson’s vocabulary (1-2 minutes) to build routine.
• Teacher Action: Write 3 previously learned interest-related words on the board with pictures.
• Student Action: Choral reading and quick individual recall to reinforce vocabulary retention.
• Transition: Introduce a new set of hobby words using flashcards (e.g., faire du sport, regarder la télé, cuisiner, danser).

2. Vocabulary Introduction (15 minutes)

• Interactive Flashcard Activity:

  • Present 10 new vocabulary words with images.
  • Students repeat pronunciation chorally and individually.
  • Use mini-gestures/miming to reinforce meaning (e.g., miming reading or playing).
  • Ask brief comprehension questions in French (“Est-ce que tu aimes lire?”; students respond with “Oui, j’aime lire” or “Non, je n’aime pas lire”).

• Teacher Tip: Use visuals, actions, and repetition to accommodate diverse learners and increase engagement.

3. Guided Practice: Writing My Interests (15 minutes)

• Distribute My Interests worksheet with sentence starters, e.g.,:
  • “J’aime…”
  • “Je n’aime pas…”
  • “Mon hobby préféré est…”
• Students: Write 5-7 sentences about their own hobbies/interests, incorporating new vocabulary.
• Teacher circulates to provide individual support, model sentences, and encourage proper sentence structure.

4. Pair Sharing & Conversation Practice (15 minutes)

• Paired Activity: Students work in pairs to share their lists orally. Instructions:
  • Ask your partner 3 questions about their hobbies using “Aimes-tu…?”, “Quel est ton hobby préféré?”
  • Respond in complete sentences.
• Teacher Role: Monitor pairs, offer feedback, gently correct errors aloud, and encourage speaking in French.
• Extension: Each pair chooses one hobby to present to the class in 1-2 sentences during a quick plenary share.

5. Wrap-Up and Reflect (5 minutes)

• Brief whole-class reflection: Students say one new hobby word they learned and one hobby they enjoy.
• Quick formative assessment via exit ticket: Write or say one sentence in French about an interest or hobby.
• Teacher provides positive feedback and preview of next lesson: Exploring cultural hobbies/traditions in French-speaking countries.
