  1. Greeting and Introduction (2 minutes)

    • Welcome the students and briefly explain the importance of listening in daily life.
    • Mention that today they will practice being good listeners through fun activities.
  2. Listening Behaviour Discussion (3 minutes)

    • Ask students to list behaviours of a good listener (e.g., eye contact, nodding, not interrupting).
    • Write student responses on the whiteboard.
    • Explain the difference between appreciative listening (enjoying and valuing what you hear) and discrimination listening (understanding and remembering details).

Main Activity (25 minutes)

  1. Listening to the Story/Poem (5 minutes)

    • Play the audio recording of the selected short story or poem.
    • Use visual aids or illustrations to maintain engagement.
  2. Discussion and Comprehension Questions (5 minutes)

    • Ask students to recall the main ideas and details from the story/poem.
    • Example questions:
      • What was the main idea of the story/poem?
      • Can you name a character or event?
      • How did the story/poem make you feel?
  3. Interactive Learning Activity (10 minutes)

    • Distribute printed sheets with key vocabulary and questions related to the audio.
    • Divide students into pairs and assign specific sections to discuss.
    • Encourage students to act out a part of the story/poem, emphasizing listening to each other.
  4. Class Sharing and Chart Making (5 minutes)

    • Each pair will share one point they discussed or an insight they gained.
    • Create a chart on chart paper that lists the main ideas, details, and emotions from the story/poem.

Wrap-up (5 minutes)

  1. Recap and Review (2 minutes)

    • Recap the main points discussed and behaviors observed.
    • Highlight examples of good appreciative and discrimination listening behaviors demonstrated by students.
  2. Reward Positive Behaviour (3 minutes)

    • Award stickers to students who demonstrated excellent listening behaviors.
    • Encourage all students to practice these behaviors in everyday conversations and in future lessons.

Assessment

  • Formative: Observe students during discussions and activities, noting their engagement and ability to recall details from the audio.
  • Summative: Based on student responses to comprehension questions and participation in the class sharing activity.

Homework

  • Listening Practice: Students will listen to a story at home (from a book or online resource) and write down three main ideas and two details to share with the class in the next lesson.

By using this thematic approach, students not only practice their listening skills but also reinforce the importance of being an appreciative and discerning listener within varied contexts.
