Materials

• Copies of a short story or excerpt appropriate for Grade 10
• Whiteboard and markers
• Sticky notes
• Projector and screen
• Chart paper
• Markers
• "Reading Strategies" handout

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Hook: Begin with a brief storytelling activity. Share a short anecdote, then ask students to predict what might happen next. Connect this to prediction as a reading strategy.
2. Objective Sharing: Explain that today they will dive into reading strategies to improve how they analyze and enjoy texts.
3. Activate Prior Knowledge: Ask students to discuss in pairs what strategies they currently use when trying to understand difficult texts.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

1. Explain Reading Strategies:

   • Predicting: Using context clues to anticipate what comes next.
   • Visualizing: Creating mental images based on textual details.
   • Connecting: Relating the text to personal experiences, other texts, or world events.
   • Questioning: Asking questions about the text to deepen understanding.
   • Summarizing: Condensing the main ideas and details into a summary.
   • Inferring: Reading between the lines to understand the underlying meaning.
   • Evaluating: Critically analyzing the text for quality and message.

2. Distribute the "Reading Strategies" handout for students to reference during the lesson.

Guided Practice (20 minutes)

1. Read and Annotate: Distribute the short story and instruct students to read the first section.

2. Strategy Application:

   • Using sticky notes, students write predictions, notes from visualizing, and connections they make while reading.
   • In groups of four, students share their annotations and discuss their thoughts.

3. Whole-Class Discussion:

   • As a class, compile predictions and connections using chart paper.
   • Discuss how these strategies helped in understanding the text better.

Independent Practice (15 minutes)

• Students continue reading the next section of the story, this time focusing on summarizing and inferring. They should note down their summaries and inferences on the provided handout.
• Instruct students to identify the theme and author's purpose by considering their notes.

Closure (10 minutes)

1. Reflection: Ask students to reflect on which strategies they found most useful and why.
2. Peer Sharing: Students turn to a neighbor and share one new strategy they plan to use in future reading tasks.
3. Reinforcement: Summarize the day's learning and its importance in developing as a critical reader.

Assessment

• Collect students' annotated texts and "Reading Strategies" handouts for assessment of their understanding and application of strategies.
• Observe student discussions during group work for a formative assessment of their engagement with the strategies.

Extensions

• Encourage students to apply these strategies in their next independent reading assignment. They should document the process and outcomes in a reading journal, to be shared in a future class discussion.
• Suggest students write a short reflection on how the author's purpose influenced their text understanding.

This lesson plan encourages active participation, personal connection to the material, and a deeper understanding of reading strategies through varied activities. As students identify and apply these strategies, they will improve their analytical skills and become more proficient readers.
