Learning Intentions

• Students will identify and explain the main roles of the lieutenant-governor, premier, MLAs, and ministers in Alberta’s government.
• Students will collaboratively create a visual chart representing these leaders and their responsibilities.
• Students will develop an understanding that government leaders have specific duties that help manage and govern Alberta for its citizens.

Materials

• Large poster board or chart paper (one per group)
• Colour markers, coloured pencils
• Printed picture cards of the lieutenant-governor, premier, MLAs, and ministers (to help visual recognition)
• Pre-made role description cards (simple sentence descriptions)
• Sticky notes
• Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Procedure

1. Warm-Up & Review (5 minutes)

• Begin with a brief recap of Lesson 1 ("What is Government?") by asking:
  • What is government?
  • Why do we need leaders in Alberta’s government?
• Use a quick whole class discussion to activate prior knowledge.

2. Introduction: Meet the Leaders (8 minutes)

• Using the whiteboard, introduce the four key leaders: lieutenant-governor, premier, MLAs, and ministers.
• Show the picture cards and briefly explain each role in simple, relatable terms:
  • Lieutenant-Governor: The Queen’s representative in Alberta. Gives royal assent to laws.
  • Premier: Leader of the government and head of the political party with most MLAs.
  • MLAs: People elected to represent communities in the Alberta Legislature.
  • Cabinet Ministers: MLAs chosen by the premier to look after specific areas like health or education.
• Encourage student questions for clarification.

3. Group Activity: Creating a "Who's Who?" Chart (20 minutes)

• Divide students into 3 groups of four.
• Each group receives:
  • A large poster/chart paper, picture cards of leaders, and role description cards.
• Instructions:
  • Arrange the pictures on the poster to show the different leaders.
  • Match each picture with a description of their responsibility.
  • Use colour markers to illustrate or decorate each section (symbols like a crown for lieutenant-governor, a building for the legislature, etc.).
  • Write key words or short phrases (e.g. "Leads government", “Represents people”) on sticky notes for each role.
• Teacher circulates to guide and support, prompting students to think about why each role is important.

4. Sharing & Reflection (10 minutes)

• Each group briefly presents their visual chart to the class (2-3 minutes each).
• Ask questions to reinforce understanding and encourage deeper thinking:
  • Why do you think we need a premier?
  • What would happen if we didn’t have MLAs?
  • How does the lieutenant-governor help the government?
• Highlight accurate descriptions and creative ideas.

5. Consolidation & Exit Ticket (2 minutes)

• On a sticky note, students write one new thing they learned about Alberta’s leaders.
• Collect sticky notes as an informal assessment of understanding.
• Share a fun fact about the Alberta government leader for curiosity (e.g. the lieutenant-governor’s role is the busiest in Canada).

• Formative: Observation during group work and presentations; noting use of correct role names and responsibilities.
• Exit Ticket: Each student’s note to confirm grasp of key concepts.
• Teacher checklist to ensure students can identify and describe roles correctly by end of lesson.

• For students needing support:
  • Provide simpler role description cards with visuals only.
  • Pair them with supportive peers during group work.
• For advanced learners:
  • Challenge to add examples of decisions each leader might make or current leader’s name.
  • Invite them to write a sentence explaining why leadership matters in government.
