Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to demonstrate the correct way to hold a pencil, improving their fine motor skills and preparing them for writing tasks.

Materials

• A pencil
• A sheet of paper with dots
• Colourful pencil grip (optional but helps with holding)
• A small, soft toy or eraser

Lesson Outline

Introduction (2 minutes)

1. Greeting and Warm-up

   • Greet the student and engage them in a short conversation to make them comfortable.
   • Ask, "Do you know how to hold a pencil? Let's try together!"

2. Objective Sharing

   • "Today, we are going to learn how to hold a pencil in a special way called the 'Tripod Grip.' It's like your pencil is a rocket, and your fingers help it fly!"

Instruction (4 minutes)

1. Explain the ‘Tripod Grip’

   • Show how to use three fingers: the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger.
   • Explain, "Your thumb and index finger make a 'C', and the pencil rests on the middle finger."
   • Use the small toy as a character that needs a chair, and the pencil is his chair. Let the child imagine setting up the chair (pencil) properly using their fingers.

2. Demonstration:

   • Place the pencil on the table.
   • Model the process: pick it up with your thumb and index finger making a 'C' shape, resting the pencil on the side of the middle finger.
   • Rotate the pencil until it's comfortably sitting in that position, ready to write or draw.

Practice (3 minutes)

1. Guided Practice

   • Give the student the pencil with a colourful grip if available.
   • Guide their fingers into the tripod position.
   • Encourage them to mimic holding a rocket with wings ready for launch.

2. Activity: Drawing Dots

   • Ask the student to make dot patterns on the sheet of paper.
   • Use verbal cues: "Touch the paper lightly and make a dot. Let's connect the stars in the sky!"

Conclusion (1 minute)

1. Review the Skill

   • Praise the student for their efforts. "Wow, you did a fantastic job holding your pencil! Your fingers are ready to help you draw and write amazing stories."

2. Recap and Encourage

   • "Remember, your pencil is a rocket, and you have the power to make it fly wherever you want."

3. Closing

   • Finish with a cheerful goodbye and encourage them to practice at home with their family: "Show mom and dad how you can make your pencil fly!"

Assessment

• Observe the student’s ability to hold the pencil correctly.
• Encourage them to verbalize what they are doing.
• Provide immediate gentle feedback and praise.
