Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 Minutes)

• Begin with a brief discussion about the importance of using correct capitalization, spelling, and grammar in writing.
• Share an anecdote or story where a lack of these skills led to confusion or misunderstanding, engaging students with humour.
• Inform students about the lesson structure and objectives.

Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

• Introduce key concepts using a brief presentation:
  • Capitalization: Proper nouns, beginnings of sentences.
  • Spelling: Homonyms, commonly misspelled words.
  • Grammar: Subject-verb agreement, sentence fragments, and run-ons.
• Display examples of sentences with errors and demonstrate live corrections on the whiteboard, involving students by asking them what they notice.

Guided Practice (10 Minutes)

• Interactive ‘Find the Error’ Session: Project several sentences that contain errors related to the day's focus.
• Invite students to volunteer and point out errors, using red pens to correct them on projected sentences, or come up to the board themselves.
• Discuss each correction, explaining the rule it exemplifies and answering any immediate questions.

Independent Practice (10 Minutes)

• Distribute worksheets focusing on sentence correction.
• Instruct students to use red pens for corrections and green pens to rewrite corrected sentences.
• Encourage students to work silently to self-assess or use peer review in pairs.

Conclusion and Review (5 Minutes)

• Reconvene to discuss findings from independent practice.
• Highlight common errors and impressive corrections made by students.
• Ask students to share one new thing they learned today.
• Provide a tip of the day: A catchy mnemonic or idea to remember a tricky rule.
