Overview

This lesson is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, specifically Number and Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT.A.1) for Grade 3. Students will explore numbers up to 10,000, practice expanded notation, and understand number words using base 10 blocks.

Activities

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

2. Place Value Activity (10 minutes)

Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and distribute sets of base 10 blocks.

• Task: Each group receives a "number challenge" card (e.g., 2,345).
• Activity: Students build the number using base 10 blocks, physically layering the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
• Discussion: Have groups present and explain their number to the class.

3. Expanded Notation and Number Words (10 minutes)

Whole Class Instruction:

• Teacher Demonstration: Write a large number on the board, for example, 5,673. Break it down into expanded notation: 5,000 + 600 + 70 + 3.
• Activity: Students, in pairs, practice with one number each from number cards. Convert the numbers into expanded notation and then into number words (e.g., five thousand six hundred seventy-three).
• Sharing: Call on volunteers to share their expanded form and number words.

4. Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Worksheet Task: Distribute a worksheet with three sections:

• Section 1: Convert given numbers to expanded notation.
