Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard or chart paper + markers
  • “Preventing Substance Use” scenario cards (pre-prepared with brief peer pressure or risky situations)
  • Personal Action Plan worksheet (template for students)
  • Sticky notes or index cards for brainstorming

Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction & Recap (5 minutes)

  • Welcome students and briefly review the previous lessons (effects of substances, risks of addiction).
  • Explain that today’s focus is on prevention and supporting one another. Highlight why prevention is powerful.
  • Ask an engaging question: “What are some ways we can say ‘no’ if someone offers us a harmful substance?”
  • Note key student responses on the board.

2. Strategy Brainstorming in Groups (10 minutes)

  • Divide class into 6 groups of 5.
  • Each small group receives 1-2 scenario cards describing common situations involving peer pressure or substance temptation (e.g., “A friend invites you to try vaping at a party,” “Someone pressures you to skip class to hang out”).
  • Students discuss and list strategies to prevent substance use in these scenarios, including how to support peers who might struggle.
  • Encourage groups to think about practical communication techniques, refusal skills, and seeking adult support.
  • Groups write their top 3 strategies on sticky notes or index cards.

3. Classwide Share & Discussion (8 minutes)

  • Groups post their sticky notes on the board/chart.
  • Class discusses common themes and standout strategies. Teacher highlights especially effective or creative ones.
  • Emphasise skills like:
    • Refusal skills — assertive but respectful “no”
    • Peer support — encouraging friends to make safe choices
    • Identifying trusted adults
    • Engaging in healthy activities as alternatives
  • Facilitate a respectful brief conversation on how it feels to refuse and support peers, addressing empathy and resilience.

4. Personal Action Planning (5 minutes)

  • Distribute the Personal Action Plan worksheet.
  • Guide students to write:
    • One personal goal related to staying substance-free.
    • At least two strategies they will use to maintain their goal.
    • One way they will help support friends to stay substance-free.
  • Encourage students to be specific and realistic.

5. Closure & Reflection (2 minutes)

  • Invite a few volunteers to share their action plan goals if they feel comfortable.
  • Close with an empowering statement emphasising that prevention starts with each choice they make and the support they offer others.
  • Remind students that this unit is designed to help them make healthy life decisions that sustain their well-being.

Assessment & Follow-up

  • Review students’ Personal Action Plans to assess understanding of prevention strategies.
  • Optional follow-up activity: Create a classroom “Pledge Wall” where students post their plans to reinforce commitment.
  • Encourage journaling reflections on how effective their strategies are during the following weeks.

Teaching Tips & Differentiation

  • Use culturally relevant and age-appropriate language and examples in scenarios to connect with diverse students.
  • Provide sentence starters on the action plan for ELL or students needing support (e.g., “If someone offers me a substance, I will say…”).
  • For students who may already have personal/family experiences with addiction, ensure a supportive classroom environment and offer private check-in if needed.
  • Consider pairing this lesson with mindfulness exercises to build emotional regulation skills that support refusal and decision-making.

Innovative Element: Peer Support Role-Play Expansion (Optional Extension)

After the lesson, invite students to dramatise short skits based on their scenario cards, showcasing effective refusal and peer support techniques. This kinesthetic activity deepens understanding and retention through active learning.

This lesson’s design harnesses collaborative learning, self-reflection, and practical skills aligned to California standards, empowering students to confidently advocate for themselves and their peers in maintaining a substance-free lifestyle.
