Objectives

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Hook: Begin with a quick story or anecdote about someone commemorating Remembrance Day. Ask the students if they have heard of this special day before.
2. Discuss: Briefly explain what Remembrance Day is, why it is important, and its relevance to us today.
3. Objective Sharing: Inform the students about what they will learn and accomplish in today’s lesson.

Vocabulary Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Present the vocabulary list related to the Remembrance Day passage. Words include: memorial, veteran, armistice, honour, peace.
2. Write each word on the whiteboard, provide a simple definition, and use it in a sentence.

Reading Activity (15 minutes)

1. Read Aloud: Read the passage on Remembrance Day aloud to the class. Encourage students to follow along silently.
2. Passage Breaks: Stop after each paragraph to discuss the content and ensure understanding.
   • Ask open-ended questions to elicit responses and engage students.
   • Clarify any vocabulary or concepts that students find challenging.
3. Student Participation: Invite volunteers to read subsequent passages aloud to build confidence and fluency.

Comprehension Questions (10 minutes)

1. Distribute the comprehension questions handout.
2. In pairs, students complete the fill-in-the-blank questions using information from the passage.
3. Circulate the room to provide assistance and ensure students stay on task.

Closing Discussion and Timeline Activity (5 minutes)

1. Review: Quickly go over the answers to the comprehension questions as a class.
2. Timeline: Present a brief timeline of significant wars related to Remembrance Day. Discuss how these events are remembered on this day.
3. Reflection: Ask students to share what they found most interesting or important about Remembrance Day.

Extension Activities
